Here is the full quote, and context of the comments at B&B Obama-Biden
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 11:49 AM by 1corona4u
I took the time this morning to watch, and transcribe, the word for word topic, which has caused so much controversy. This is 100% what was said.

"Hate Crimes have gone way up, we've also seen this epidemic of nooses being hung up since the events down in Jen la, and it indicates the degree to which president has to set a tone of bringing all people together as opposed to excluding people, and being willing to talk about racial issues when they arise, and having a justice dept, a civil rights division, of justice dept, that is aggressive about investigating it, but there's one last point, it's going to Joe....a wide coalition from people from reverend Sharpton, to anti-defamation league, have come together around around hate crimes legislation, and I know you have been working on this for a quite some time, and we need to strengthen the enforcement of hate crime legislations, there's work being done right now in the house that is pending, and just wanted to get your perspective, this is something that is very important to me, as a member of the of the judiciary committee, uh, can we move this foreward into something that I will prioritize when I am president, but I don't want to have to wait until I am."

Joe;"By the way, we can and we should move it forward, and the impediment right now is the president, senator Kennedy and I and 40-38 other co sponsors you're a co sponsor as well, have ben pushing this, for funding, look, the bottom line here is , I it all gets down for example, blocked a Delawarean, from being head of the civil rights division when I was chairman of the judiciary committee to get Deval Patrick, and endorser and supporter of yours, we need someone in the civil rights division who is aggressive, we need a justice dept that is aggressive when going after these hate crimes, I would not wait, why did we not hear immediately from the justice dept., in the jena 6, why did we not hear immediately when the rash of burnings took place, why did we not hear, the reason is they are not committed, hate crimes are just that, the vilest and filthiest of crimes, and when you let one celebrated hate crime go unattended, you generate, you generate an attitude, and I'll conclude by saying, that's why if you notice, in my immigration answer, the first thing I said, is you've got to take the sting out of this, the majority of people, undocumented are not spanish speaking people taking people's jobs, that's the start, tell the truth, prosecute, have this justice dept in a civil rights head, and I'd be happy to make you the head of the civil rights division with me as president of the USA,(laughter) no, I'm serious"... (applause/laughter)

Hopefully, as Joe said, this will take the "sting" out of this issue.

3. Why would Biden offer Obama such a low level position in the DoJ? Why not offer him the AG? Or at
least Solicitor General?

In the entire history of the US, has a sitting Senator ever given up his or her position in the Senate to take such a demotion to head up a DoJ subcommittee?

What was Biden thinking? In a fantasy Biden administration, who does he believe he could get as AG or Solicitor General who would serve half as honorably as Obama (a constitutional law professor and the first black editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review)?

I know that some people think that Biden would make a better Secretary of State than President of Vice-President. So many people feel this way that Biden has had to refuse the position preemptively.

This is like Obama offering Biden a position as Second Assistant Secretary of State in the Obama administration.

Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 12:22 PM by Stop Cornyn
... no, I'm serious."

Why on earth would Biden offer Obama -- a sitting Senator -- a position as head of the DoJ's civil rights division? Even AG, who heads up the DoJ, and Solicitor General, the DoJ's top lawyer, would be a big step down for a sitting Senator, and yet Biden offered Obama a position in the DoJ well below AG or Solicitor General.

Why on earth would Biden do that?

How would that be different from Obama offering Biden a position as Second Assistant to the Secretary of State (which would be a position in the SoS's office comparable to the head of the civil rights department's in the DoJ)?

9. Sigh....
Why would Obama just assume HE would be the president? I mean, he said it, as if it were a foregone conclusion, and if you didn't actually SEE it, where as I did, you'll just have to wait and see if they put the video online, and judge for yourself.

Really, this is ridiculous. It was 2 candidates exchanging barbs, nothing more.

10. omg - are you for real? Did you not read what was posted?
Let me try to explain it to you!

Biden is agressively trying to get hate crime legislation passed but there is no one working in this administration to help him.

He was offering Obama a compliment saying that if he was head of the civil rights division this legislation would get passed.

15. He was offering a sitting Senator a job that's not even in the top two positions at the DoJ.
That's a HUGE step down from Senator (hell, AG at the top of the DoJ is generally a step down from Senator).

How's that a compliment?

17. Open your mind. The conversation wasn't about Obama - it was about what it would take to get Hate
Crimes Legislation passed.....

If only there was someone in the administration that was as committed to the cause as Obama . . .

Why is that so hard to understand?

41. The only thing that Barack Obama of 2007 has in common with the Deval Patrick of 1994
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 08:59 PM by EffieBlack
is that they are both black and they both went to Harvard Law School.

Other than that, they are miles apart.

At the time of his appointment to Justice, this was Deval Patrick's background:

1982-JD Harvard (first African American student to win Harvard Moot Court Competition)
1982-1983 Law Clerk to the Hon. Stephen Reinhardt (9th Circuit)
1983-1986 Staff Attorney, NAACP Legal Defense Fund
1986-1994 Attorney, Hill and Barlow firm
1994 - Appointed by Bill Clinton to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights

Deval Patrick has had an illustrious career since, but at the time he was named to head the Civil Rights Division, he wasn't even close to where Obama is now.

And, now that he has become governor of Massachusetts, I'm sure he would be insulted if Joe Biden - or anyone else - suggested that he go to work at the Justice Department as an Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 10:40 PM by EffieBlack
(although I recall nothing of the sort at the time, but I could be mistaken) as a preface to talking about giving Obama the job.

So my reference is completely on topic.

(And I wasn't talking to you, anyway).

14. Richardson got in a good jab, LOL..and there was a fight between Joe & DK
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 12:21 PM by 1corona4u
(paraphrased)

Ok, The topic was whether or not they should normalize relations with Cuba, and he said no, but we need to work towards it. At this point, Richardson asked; "since this is a black brown forum, is there anyway, since I am the brown guy, I could get some time, and the audience applauded, and laughed.

Then they go on to the part, in which each of them ask another candidate a aquestion, so DK asked HIMSELF :eyes: a question about his own health care plan....most of the other candidates just laughed at/with him. Biden addresses the Iraq plan, DK starts to argue with Biden about HIM having a plan, HR1234, and he argues with Joe stridently for about 60 seconds, kind of embarrassing, and DK was saying something about "others" moving into Iraq if we leave, which really pissed Joe off. Joe told him that he had never heard of his bill, LOL, and that really pissed DK off. The two were going back and forth, until the lady taking/asking questions asked them to stop. Even she said; "You know, Congressman, maybe you should have asked Senator Biden your question", and said they needed to move on. Joe was not happy. DK, just plain embarrassing. DK, was trying to diss Joe, by telling Joe he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about, and that Joe had not met with the international community...yeah, right DK.....

19. I wish they would just put the thing online, but
it was in HD, so the file would be GIGANTIC, unless they downgraded it. So, I'm not sure if that's possible. I'm not really in the know about uploading media files that large...it would probably be thousands of GB for the whole show..this clip would probably be hundreds of GB, since it was about 5 minutes of discussion, in HD.

to suit the needs of people with an agenda or pre-conceived prejudices.

Looking at a lifetime record can be very helpful, and Joe Biden's record on civil-rights is an EXCELLENT one.

and rest assured, I let them know my thoughts on it. Everyone should. Regardless of the story, we need to start holding these media outlets RESPONSIBLE for their skewed, and careless remarks.

It, however, should not come as a surprise to anyone, that the media always spins the shit out of things. It's in their blood.

It's like he just made it up out of thin air.

I have heard from someone close to the campaign that Ben Smith is no friend to Biden.
So that explains it why he is trying to destroy him....just as Biden's #'s doubled in Iowa.

33. I have a dream that one day DUers will care about context and facts
but that's unlikely as it's more effective to get people angry enough over nothing so as not to not ask any questions. Some DUers, like most Republicans, like to use racism to advance their agenda.

Republicans are the ones who say we have a problem with Alberto Gonzales or Clarence Thomas because of their race, not their radical hateful views. So of course some DUers will use it for Obama. Kudos to Bidenites for remaining positive and patiently reporting facts and context. This won't be over any time soon...and that's good for Biden and his supporters. They're scared of us. They're not used to this. They have no idea who they are dealing with.

though I don't suppose we'll see it come true. Meanwhile, we remain persistent and consistent, at least for the most part.

People need to stop treating this like a play-off game. Politics is serious business and our future depends on the decisions we make.

It would have been completely appropriate for Biden to joke about making Sharpton or Jackson head of that division. Biden operates off of deeply ingrained stereotypes.
