"Shecky Obama"
Okay, so this is just a trivial fluff piece. But it made me chuckle and that's not a bad thing. :D

1. What this guy is saying is TRUE--and Nelson's BOMFOG is a hoot...
Each time I hear Obama's "Fired up!" story, it gets longer. The version Obama told Sunday afternoon in Cedar Falls, Iowa, clocked in at over six minutes. That is roughly as much time as Chris Dodd got to speak in the last debate. When reporters now hear the words "Greenwood, S.C.," they know they have enough time for a bathroom visit, a hush-hush cellphone call with a confidential source, 17 voter interviews and a sandwich.

3. It made ME laugh!
Being a good storyteller is a very useful skill for a leader, too.

6. The Lincoln parallels continue
I hope they don't go too far.

10. I wasn't thinking Lincoln when I said that.
And I'm pretty sure a majority of Americans are generally unaware of Abe's legendary storytelling ability.

However, if the shoe fits.... :D

You're right, though. Hammering at parallels could become very tiresome and a negative.

12. I don't think you were hammering. The reason I don't want to see the parallels continue...
has something to do with how Lincoln exited the public stage. Literally.

I don't use the term "Lincolnesque" lightly. The more you look at the two men's biographies, the more you see the parallels have almost nothing to do with being Illinois lawyers and everything to do with character trumping experience.

I'm a Biden supporter. But the second he drops out, Obama has my support.

13. OMG, I didn't consider that!
I have not been comparing biographies, but now I'm going to have to do so.

Biden's a good man and I'd love to see him play a very prominent statesmanship role in the new administration.

You'll be joyfully welcomed on the Obama bandwagon! :pals:

2. Cute up till the end
The journalists speculate on how Obama would personalize the joke made famous by the movie The Aristocrats. That's not a nice note to end on. Bit of a cheap shot. I don't wanna think about that movie. I laughed damn hard when I saw it but I never want to see it again, let alone think about it.

Except the segment with Martin Mull. I would like to see that part again. I love Martin Mull. You wouldn't know it from the roles he takes, but he's a very funny man. I saw him live when he used to perform as Martin Mull and His Fabulous Furniture. Loved him. He's a real artist, too. Come to think of it, so is Steve Martin. Or does he just collect art? Steve Martin, Martin Mull. Hmmm.

What was that Obama joke again?

4. I never saw the movie.
So I missed the meaning behind any cheap shot.

5. now you're making me think about it
The title refers to a joke that comics have told one another since the days of vaudeville, but never performed for any audience. It is the world's dirtiest joke. The punch line is always the same, but every comic puts his own twist on how he arrives at it.

Dozens of comics perform it in the movie, and some of the variations will make your gorge rise. But it's that very excessiveness that makes it so funny. Still, I don't want to think of how Barack Obama (or any other candidate) might tell it. And so my thoughts turn to Martin Mull. :)

7. Sorry!

You did say you didn't want to think about it.

Thanks for the explanation. I remember reading something about the movie when it first came out and thought it sounded pretty lame then, so I'm glad I didn't bother seeing it.

Martin Mull's art looks like a much better focus for your thoughts and there are many other options, as well. :)

8. no worries
My only problem is too much coffee and too little sleep. Leads to babbling. But at least it kicks your thread. ;)

A happy day to you and yours too!

9. That really is a "comedian's/storyteller's" joke, and yes, you are right, the joke is....
gross. However, it absolutely does NOT have to be! It actually CAN be told without getting disgusting--it must surprise, or outrage, or shock, or convey some emotion, though, so that there is a sharp contrast with the ultimate punch line.

The film is really kinda "inside baseball." I wouldn't recomment it to any of my senior friends or aquaintances, or anyone who prizes their decorum.

The redeeming aspect of it is that it didn't cost much to make....!

I thought the bit about the stump speech and the reporters was right on the money. You can kinda tell when a well-worn speech is winding up, even when it's not obvious to an audience, when there's a rustle in the herd, and they all start lumbering off, like elephants in search of a water hole.
