1. We must have seen different debates.
I found this to be his weakest appearance yet.

23. To be accurate, he compared her framing of the payroll tax issue to Mitt and Rudi
And he was right -- Hillary saying that a payroll tax adjustment is "a trillion dollar tax increase on the middle class"
is exactly how pro-business Republicans scare off voters about the issue.

31. "Did very well"? Did he win on the slots? Cuz he sucked at the debate...
"did very well"? - only if by "did very well," you mean "didn't puke on his shoes"....

presidential material. We have too many issues in crisis to leave it to him. He is not ready.

12. when actually confronted, rather than have the Russert-silver-platter
he could not respond to the questions given. He had some precanned insults ready, but when he needed to think on his feet, he couldn't do it. He was a lightweight in comparison to Clinton/ Dodd/Biden.

The social security question / the license question are two that come to mind. Early on he was put in his place and lost his spark.

He just does not look like a fighter next to the three major leaguers.

19. I thought he handled both those questions quite well and put Clinton in her place
especially with the social security question.

It appears to me you were not watching the same debate. Clinton came off as canned and fake.

13. Obama tries to damn hard and he is too cute by half and
HRC within the first 12 minutes of the debate took on the best shot Obama could make and then she countered and it took Obama back and from that point on Obama did not perform well. When Obama could not answer a simple yes or no question about the drivers license and instead rambled on for about 2 to 3 minutes that did not serve him well, but when HRC answered with a simple NO, she chopped Obama off at the knees.

Oh my goodness and when she took on Edwards, and he looked like a deer caught in the headlights he too changed his whole style of delivery and played to HRC.

Within that first 12 minutes the debate was HRC's, and after that the whole debate changed and the tone of it changed because HRC was in command of that stage, and that is why HRC is getting all these accolades about her performance.

She was dead solid perfect tonight.

Ben David

It wasn't superb or horrible. Edwards was horrible, and I was impressed by Hillary's ability to non-answer.

16. I agree with your assessment completely
Especially the part about Hillary's ability to non-answer. It was SO frustrating for me to watch, and not see someone call her on it. Obama and Biden are my top two, I thought Biden did well, Obama did ok, Edwards not so great tonight. I also couldn't understand all the commentators raving about Hillary's performance. Whatever they saw, I didn't see. I saw a lot of dancing around questions, which is not something I want to see anymore of after the present administration.

She doesn't want to raise taxes on the top 6%, I figured out that much. Obama did call her on that, whether her booing supporters liked it or not, it was true. I would love to see her answer a question - I mean really answer one - the dancing around is really getting annoying. It's refreshing to hear the normally long-winded Joe Biden actually answer a question clearly, concisely, and intelligently - particularly when following Hillary's dance arounds.

29. Obama is getting much better in a debate setting
He was awkward and unsure in the early debates but tonight I thought he was finally catching on. The "uhs" are all but gone and many answers were downright elegant, similar to his planned events.

Frankly, I don't give a damn what the commentators said on CNN and elsewhere. I'm a handicapper and if I had to rely on other people's opinions I would have been busted and out of town two decades ago. Obama was strong tonight and he'll only benefit from a performance like this.

Let me add Edwards is my first choice and I've always been a bit skeptical about Obama. But in watching the debate tonight I was impressed by Obama above everyone else. It's no different than when I bet against my favorite teams, which is often. You've got to throw out allegiance in favor of reality and tonight Obama was the star. He may take some heat for the weak answer on the driver's license response but that was his one poor moment. Overall he nailed one reply after another and came across as the most thoughtful and visionary.
