Kerry Over Edwards 66-14 In New York
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 05:37 PM by DrFunkenstein
ALBANY, N.Y. - Democratic front-runner John Kerry has a commanding lead over rival John Edwards among New Yorkers likely to vote in the March 2 primary, according to a statewide poll released Friday.

The poll by Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion found the four-term Massachusetts senator leading Edwards, 66 percent to 14 percent, among likely voters. Al Sharpton was at 7 percent and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio was at 3 percent.

While Edwards, the first-term North Carolina senator, has said he expects to do particularly well in upstate New York where manufacturing job losses have been heavy, the Marist poll found Kerry was well ahead — 70 percent to 14 percent — in that traditionally more conservative region.

1. Edwards has a lot of work to do in NY
He better campaign hard, lots of delegates in that state.
Question: IS NY one of the 3 states Edwards is campaigning in? Hmm...

6. John Edwards needs New York
The states that would give Edwards the momentum to win the nomination come post-March 2nd. Both California and New York are on March 2nd, and Edwards will need to come in a close second in both states.

A look at the calendar:

Feb 24th: Hawaii, Idaho, and Utah
Feb 26th: Democratic debate

March 2nd: CA, CT, MD, MA, NY, OH, RI, VT, GA

If Edwards is pulling these kinds of numbers in New York, he has A LOT of ground to make up in order to stop Kerry's momentum. If he can stop him here, he may be able to make a comeback in the March 9th primaries of Florida, Lousiana, Missippi, and Texas.

If Kerry and Edwards are in a dead heat, then it probably will be settled on Tue th 16th of Illinois.

Edwards will still need to win a few more states than Illinois if he comes in a close second on the March 2nd date. Kerry does have the upper hand right now.

However, Illinois may play a significant role this year.

Congratulations :-)

8. It's that city vote
But don't underestimate the newspapers there for their ability to blow up any developing hiccup and the potential of turning that hiccup into a hit on the poll numbers.

I think Kerry will look more at ease in the photo shots in the NYC buildings and the trappings of the political establishment. Edwards might not have the organization to move as smoothly there.

The NYC firefighters should be a powerful force for Kerry. I wonder if Sen. Clinton will embrace Kerry now that her supposed horse Clark is backing him?

11. I'm in NYC, not at all surprised
People know Kerry here, it's regional and it's just image. Remember that Lieberman was at the top of the polls here for a while. Edwards would have to work very hard here to get a decent showing. I would write it off if I were him and concentrate on States that would be more open to him and his message.

17. WHOA!!!
my twin sister lives in NY. She is supporting Kerry as is her significant other. However, Edwards looks very much like her son - my nephew. So, we like him too.

18. Ohio will be the real Kerry-Edwards battleground.

The only problem for Edwards is, win or lose, it won't be enough.

But I think the way things have ended up is good for all of us.
