(John) Hall to (Eliot) Spitzer: Withdraw your driver’s license proposal
He said Spitzer should withdraw his proposal and focus instead on controlling US borders and restricting the flow of illegal immigrants into the country and state.

1. You are still the one, HALL.
How can Spitz stop illegals from coming in to the country or state?
How can Spitz take on big business and BOTH parties and the federal government - all of whom have no need to enforce immigration laws?

I am safer with all NYS drivers being legal and insured. I know that illegal aliens are (for the most part) hardworking, kind, family people that would never harm a soul.

HEY HALL - HOW WOULD YOU PULL THESE PEOPLE OUT OF THE SHADOWS AND MAKE THE STREETS SAFER?

Eliot Spitzer is acting out of courage. What is Hall acting out of?

3. Spitzer is acting out of opportunity, not courage.
For him to show courage would be to take the arrows from those who support illegal immigrants who call him mean spirited and scream "It's for the children" as he follows the section of NY law that requires a Social Security number to be presented when you apply for your license.

Now to answer your questions.

How can Spitz stop illegals from coming in to the country or state?
By enforcing the laws on the books requiring that people submit a Social Security number when getting a license or registering a car, and by supporting the enforcement of laws concerning the hiring of employees and verifying their Social Security number for employment.

How can Spitz take on big business and BOTH parties and the federal government - all of whom have no need to enforce immigration laws?
He can do that by framing the debate in the terms of National Security, taking the issue away from the Republicans and putting his fellow Democrats into a position to look strong on security by backing him on this issue.
Big Business? They obey the laws or get fined in accordance to those laws. He was a tough Attorney General, he needs to continue that strength as Gov.

6. big business makes the laws my friend
They decide how the laws are acted out, what the "fines" are, and how the "fines" are doled out.

By making our streets safer and insurance less expensive, Spitz was doing the right thing for NYS.

He was also doing the right thing for Dems. This puts us in the corner of latinos, and puts the GOP with the Border Patrol Crowd.
We (Dems) love latinos. The GOP is racist and hates latinos. We want them to be hardworking, kind, and legal. They want them to be hardworking and illegal.

5. I'm with the Gov on
this one. Read something yesterday that some of the NY delegation were meeting with him today(?) to ask him to withdraw his plan. They are scared of losing their seats instead of standing for what is right which would actually help them.

2. See, what I don't get is how giving someone a driver's license
is doing them such a big favor. Like they're gonna stop driving because they have no license. And unlicensed drivers usually have no insurance, so if one of these guys hits you, you'll be shit out of luck.
If I have to have a driver's license why shouldn't they?

BTW my mom got pissed off at the DMV when she was about 60 and for the rest of her life drove around without a license or insurance. She died at age 86.

4. I think that is exactly the right approach

If I have to have a driver's license why shouldn't they?

That is exactly what anyone proposing to issue licenses should be saying. It feeds into the they shouldn't be rewarded mindset without pandering to it; it focuses on the public safety aspect. And it portrays the people affected as people with responsibilities and obligations to the public, which is a good thing.
