NEWMARKET – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said he's a better choice than primary rival Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to battle special interests blocking reform on health care, climate change and other issues.

Edwards said it takes a fighter like himself, rather than a self-described unifier like Obama to break the logjam on Capitol Hill where lobbyists write the laws or block passage of meaningful change.

"I don't think you can compromise with the entrenched interests in Washington. They are too powerful," Edwards said after a town-hall-style forum at the Stone Church in Newmarket.

On Monday, Edwards told a New York Times reporter in Iowa that Obama's view was a "fantasy."

Edwards said as a trial lawyer, one-term North Carolina senator and advocate for the poor, he's battled the establishment.

"You've got to take them on. I've done this my entire, adult life," Edwards said.

This is Edwards funniest bit yet.

1. Well, he didn't actually say that
He's said some crazy things, but that would have really been stretching the limits.

He's just saying he'd be better because he's more of a fighter than Obama. He did mention his record, but not to say that it's better than Obama's, but that it contains evidence of fighting against the establishment.

I don't agree with his contention that fighting gets things done more than uniting or that he even has a significant record of fighting the establishment, but I think it's important that we quote him fairly.

3. I changed the OP to reflect that it was the headline rather than a direct quote.

entrenched interests in Washington."

As his "bold" health care plan clearly illustrates.

5. How Grand! Edwards is the heavyweight of courage, I see......
Cause wasn't that him opposing the Iraq War before it became the popular thing to do?

and,

wasn't he loudly insisting that all of the votes be counted in Ohio during the 2004 election?

and wasn't he right there supporting Kucinich's Impeachment legislation?

Boy, that Edwards is soooo brave! :eyes:

Hard to disagree with that. This "Unity" shtick is nothing more than campaign rhetoric like *'s Compassionate Conservative

15. Edwards is starring in a horror movie:
It's mostly him running away from his record.

13. Edwards doesn't have much of a track record
in government, at least.

Obama can point to bipartisan legislative achievements at the state and federal level. His rhetoric may sound more high-minded than is supported by reality, but at least it matches up with the past 20-plus years of his career, from community service to the U.S. Senate. Edwards is Johnny-come-lately to the public sector, and, once there, his actual achievements are virtually nil.
