I just got through to Mike Michaud 's office(D-ME) just now.

I spoke to a young sounding staffer who sounded pretty tired. First I asked him how Rep. Michaud voted today. He said, "Um, It's been kind of a crazy day around here and I have to be honest, I'm not sure how or if Rep. Michaud voted on the issue to table the resolution. I don't think he voted on it at all but I'm not sure. I've spent most of the afternoon taking phone calls on this". I asked him if he could tell me the Congressman's stance on impeachment of Cheney. He said, "Right now, I'm not really sure how to answer". I told him I like Rep. Michaud but think he's been dead wrong not to support impeachment efforts so far. His answer: "Well things are certainly getting interesting. Who knows where this will lead".

It was a weird and interesting conversation.

2. What he was saying is that as things change, he's on the phones with constituents and

he doesn't know what the last debated issue and vote was. I'm sure he will know these things in 15-20 minutes, but if he's on the phones, he's doing his job.

3. I don't know, the young person was probably overwhelmed

Many a time when things were crazy, I didn't quite know what I was doing, either.

4. I've talked to staffers in Michaud's office quite a few times

in the last two years and never had such a weird conversation. I'm not sure he knew nothing about his job. It was kind of like he didn't want to answer. What I can't effectively communicate is the tone of the guy's voice. He sounded like someone was sitting in the room with him or monitoring the call giving him out-of-earshot directions on what to say. I kept picturing Michaud sitting in the corner of the guy's cube whispering, "Tell him nothing...say you're not sure...say it's been a weird day". It was really strange.
