Hearing a story from a friend, there is NO EXCUSE for not having stem cell technology available
A friend of mine just got back from Russia, visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg and a few other side journeys. That was cool.

But he said that he ran into a couple on their second trip back from Russia where the husband had been in a car accident that paralyzed him from the neck down. They found out about a clinic in Russia that does stem cell treatment on patients with amazing results. After the first treatment using his own cells that were then duplicated and then injected, he now has use of his arms and hands. After four more treatments, he will be nearly fully recovered over about two years of treatment.

The place has a web site:
http://www.neurovita.ru/

A statement on the site says:

"Research activity is of crucial importance for the Clinic. The NeuroVita Clinic is an active participant of interinstitutional and international research programs to develop and implement state-of-the-art medical techniques of diagnostics and therapies of severe diseases and injuries of nervous system. The main interests of the Clinic belong to research of new cell medical biotechnologies for neurology, neurosurgery and neurooncology. The unique feature of the Clinic is that it does not use donor, fetal and/or embryonic cell material and transplants only autologous (patient’s own) cell material. Only transplantation of autologous stem cells permitted us to overcome the barriers of tissue compatibility, refuse from immunosuppressive therapy, to resolve ethical, legislative and religious issues that are linked with administrative limitations of clinical application of cell therapy and tissue engineering of brain and spinal cord."

Democrats need to shove stories like this into the faces of those that want to stop progress. It is utterly shameful to think that someone who would otherwise be told to just waste away in a bed paralyzed can get healed in a short time.

3. Not sure about that...
I don't know if the clinic does that, but these seems to be research showing how stem cells can reverse diabetes.

4. thank you
I usually google for research news weekly. I feel in my gut the cure will be with stem cells.

2. I agree, it's totally ludicrous that this isn't legal here, for so many people
who would benefit.

5. Um. It is legal.
The problem is that the federal government is barred from funding it.

6. You know that's what I meant, that the dim one continues to veto progress. nt

If there's one thing we can agree on, it's that the guy is a flaming idiot.

8. The federal government doesn't fund embryonic stem cell research
But this is using one's own stem cells, therefore it would be funded.

9. The problem is that they'd say you're killing your "inner baby"
Anyone against embryonic stem cell or any other research is a terrorist in my view.

They are either with us or against us. Period.

10. The ban on NIH funding is for human embryonic stem cells. HESCs.
Nothing else. Research using cord blood stem cells, adult stem cells, and numerous other kinds of stem cells can--and does--receive federal funding. You'll see news releases about them from time to time.

HESCs from older, approved cell lines also get federal funding.

There is nothing preventing states, corporations, non-profits, or individuals from funding or doing HESC research; just from using federal funds on non-approved HESC lines.

11. No ban on autologous stem cells? This could be a way to get it going...
Adult stem cells can be described as very old used car parts to fix a truck.
