DALLAS (Reuters) - Doug Warner seems like a stereotypical Republican: Southern, white, male, he served in the military, drives an SUV and likes hunting and fishing.

He is also openly gay.

Warner's sexual orientation makes for an awkward fit in a party with a powerful evangelical Christian wing that regards homosexuality as a sin and same-sex marriage as a threat to the traditional family.

"I believe that the approach of the social extremists eliminates our party's ability to grow in the future," he told Reuters by phone from his home in Charleston, South Carolina.

For years, bashing the "homosexual agenda" worked well for Republicans. In 2004, the party placed anti-gay marriage referendums on 11 state ballots. All passed by large majorities and the tactic boosted turnout among religious conservatives, helping President George W. Bush win re-election.

2. i have never understood
why LCR's would want to be a part of a party that thinks you are less than human and do not deserve basic human rights. No matter how anyone explains it to me I just don't get it.

5. There may be some degree of self-loathing in it.....
they're gay, and they've accepted that they're gay, but they don't necessarily like the fact....

4. I don't get it, either....
Especially since I've seen various delegates visit LCR meetings and flat-out lie by saying how supportive they are of the gay community.... It's just disgusting. They'll say anything for a vote.

10. There was a term a while ago
For people who were happy being put down, who comforted themselves with the thought that at least they were superior to others like them. I believe it was "house nigger".

11. the official stance goes something like this...
Within the republican party there are many social and economic positions. The LCR folks supposedly stand for fiscal responsibility, small government, and other non-socially conservative issues.

However, the republicans in action haven't been doing any of that, so it's almost a mute point.

I don't, personally, think it makes any sense at all. It's bad enough having the democratic party more then willing to through us under the bus. Selling out to people who openly recriminating against us... nothing makes sense to me anymore.

12. Greed, sexism and racism all play large roles.
There is a reason you see very few women and people of color among the LCR's. For the most part, it is about white men fighting for the privileges they feel entitled to, but are denied because they are gay.
