Edwards: Dems need to show 'backbone'

By AMY LORENTZEN
Associated Press Writer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards calls on his party to "have a little guts" and be a voice for working people in a television ad set to begin airing in Iowa on Thursday.

In the 60-second spot titled "Heroes," Edwards said it is time for the Democratic Party to represent America's working men and women.

"It is time for our party, the Democratic Party, to show a little backbone, to have a little guts, to stand up for working men and women," the former North Carolina senator says. "If we are not their voice, they will never have a voice."

Edwards also talks about his wife, Elizabeth, who has incurable breast cancer, and says that after 12 hours of tests and getting the news they decided they would try to be that voice for regular Americans.

"We're not going to quietly go away. Instead we're going to go out and fight for what it is we believe in," he says.

2. Maybe he can rent one with all that Trial Lawyer cash he's getting.
Once again, he uses weasel words to imply Clinton has no backbone or guts, just like he's "nearly" accused her of taking bribes and lying. By next week, he'll hint she kidnapped the Lindbergh baby.
What a pathetic little man he is.

9. You mean the trial lawyers
that go after corporations that have negligently hurt people, so that they could save a few bucks. I'd rather have Edwards recieve their financial backing, than the defense, pharmaceutical and insurance money that Senator Clinton is recieving.

20. You use some of the ugliest rhetoric in DU ......
Why ? ....

It is obvious yours is nothing but a abusive ad hominem attack without basis ....

There is nothing constructive for DUers in that diatribe ...

22. Accusing Clinton and Obama of being spineless is "pretty rhetoric"?
Double standard much?

23. I support all the Democratic Party candidates ... I am not a Candidate Partisan ....
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 12:57 PM by Trajan
Even if I disagree with one, I am not about to spew negative speculations about what they might do ....

We should defend all the candidates from needless ad hominem attacks .... Frankly your post presents the kind of discourse many of us here despise ....... It satisfies no one but yourself (and the other Candidate-Sectarians who feel their best offense is abusive ad hominem appeals) ....

14. The backbone's connected to the headbone.
Except for some of these guys, there ain't no freakin' connection!!!

The Iraq War is the numero uno issue - and until they start demanding that we end that war - they have no connection to reality!!

They can talk healthcare plans all they want to - dead men don't need healthcare plans!!

15. Well, yeah................... of course backbone is a requirement.

And glad to see some, too. These times require more than the usual backbone, IMHO.

21. Dems: Edwards Needs To Say Impeachment
Because that's what "we believe in."

Edwards: "If you're looking for heroes, don't look to me."

Exactly.
