Have you been called by a national pollster about this election?
I know that I haven't, but I keep reading that the majority of Dems support Hillary. I know that I do not, nor do the people I know. So - is the usual poll of about 2,000 THAT much more statistically perfect than the poll of 100 people I have asked? And if so, why?

Have you been called?

5. NO. I haven't even received a Zogby poll in a long time!
I don't know a single soul who supports Hillary.

7. In a word, yes it is
The 2000 people are randomly chosen and are a representative sample. Your 100 would be likely not be random. If you are likemost people you hang out with people similar to you. That isn't random. To use an example. Go to your local video arcade and ask about a curfew. Then go to the local nursing home and ask the same question. I think you will get radically different results.

8. The dearth of understanding of surveying and social sciences boggles the mind here at DU.

I can understand not getting the math or formulas or even some of the more complex methodologies involving weighting.

But to assume polls are incorrect based on one;s social sphere is just silly.

I have some political friends, some non-political friends.

I have never meet a Joe Biden supporter or a Bill Richardson supporter.

Does that mean they have no support?

I'll go even further, I know one Rudy supporter, 2 Ron Paul supporters, 2 Edwards supporters and a single but devoted Kucinich fan.

Everyone else I know who I have spoken to about the election is for Obama or Hillary with 2 or 3 still undecided but hemming & hawing between those two.

9. Primaries are not high priority. Pollsters don't do pro bono work, and networks are not yet engaged.
Polls taken now are by wanta be's or they are trying to drum up business.

A few weeks ago rasmussen called. I said I was a republican conservative christian, strongly against Bush, strong supporter of Brownback in the primaries but will vote for Hillary in the general.

Let 'em figure that out.

13. Hope This Helps....
There are two kinds of samples in the world. There are probability samples, and there are non-probability samples.” Your sample is the latter...

and I never respond to polls when I am called. I am eternally in the "no response" category. Thye whole country would be much better off if everyone just refused to ever respond to polls and surveys. Then, gee...politicians could just do what was right and not what would get them the most votes.

2,000 is significantly better than your poll of 100, since it is:

1. A much larger sample size.
2. Random.

(I was also called by Time, I think, for the 2000 election.)

22. No, because I have caller I.D. and I do not answer my phone....
Perhaps, I should START answering my long distance number phone calls, thinking that they may be a polling company instead of a company trying to get monies for a particular charity!
