On Second Thought: Clinton endorses Spitzer plan.

Here is Taylor Marsh] supporting Clinton, "Russert Leads The Boys in All Out Clinton Assault" (empahsis added):

The drivers licenses question at the end obviously surprised Clinton. But when explaining Spitzer's plan Clinton once again showed something that her opponents do not get. She is willing to go to bat for our guy in New York, Elliot Spitzer, who has been trying to deal with the immigration challenge he's facing as governor. The same cannot be said for the rest of the group on stage standing next to Clinton. What's Spitzer supposed to do when Congress shirks their responsibility on the immigration issue? Clinton absolutely got caught up in the subject, but she nailed, without flinching, what Spitzer is trying to do. It's obvious that most of her opponents not only weren't familiar with Spitzer's legislation, which lost out because no one would stand up with him, but were only interested in going after Clinton. As an aside, I think this issue will ignite the wingnuts, just like the anti gay marriage amendments did in '04. I'm against illegal immigrants getting licenses as was proposed by Spitzer (too cumbersome, for one), but I fully understand and appreciate Spitzer had to do something because Congress is not. However, that's no reason to throw Spitzer under a bus. Clinton is getting hammered today, which I predicated, especially on the drivers license question moment, which came at the end of a withering assault from The Boys. But make no mistake about it she stood up and fought back for Spitzer.

Is Hillary For Spitzer's Driver's License Plan? Still Unclear

October 31, 2007
"A Day Later, Clinton Embraces Spitzer’s License Effort."

That's the headline on a New York Times piece which just went up at the paper's Caucus blog. It seems to suggest that Hillary has firmed up her answer on the question of whether she supports Eliot Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. But what exactly does she support? It's still unclear.

<...>

I'm generally less sympathetic (perhaps to a fault) than other people to the constant complaints that Hillary won't say where she stands on key questions. But this one's puzzling to say the least. As Josh noted earlier today, Hillary had lots of stuff to say about the policy problem Spitzer's facing. It would be nice to know whether she supports his proposed solutions. And we still don't.

THE FALLOUT MOUNTS

<...>

In aftermath of debate debacle, Clinton announces she’ll support Spitzer’s effort to give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.[/div>

From Garance Franke-Ruta:

Perhaps I am not giving my fellow Americans enough credit, however, it seems to me that the Democratic presidential field last night just committed suicide en masse, with Hillary Clinton the last to swallow the poison by holding out until this afternoon to endorse New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposal to give illegal immigrants some form of driver’s licenses.

5. Yes. In sailing parlance one could say the Great Navigatrix is "tacky"
Which ever way the wind blows, and even against it if it serves the purpose.

It's just shamelessissimo: she's the penultimate ultra-moderate.

7. She had more depth than any of them there, and gave a great answer that has been twisted
by desperate opportunists.

It will blow back.

8. Republicans have got the punditocracy so convinced immigration is the new third rail...
Of politics that they simply believe any and all measures which even remotely look like they might be giving an illegal immigrant a benefit will be death to the ones advocating it. I don't thin its true. Polls I saw last year for example had a majority favoring some form of guest worker program. I think people will understand it is better to keep track of people than have uninsured and unaccountable aliens on the roads...

9. This is a state issue, not her responsibility to take a hard position
I would guess that her ideal solution is to provide States with more resources, and better enforcement of Federal Laws on the books, in addition to some way for undocumented workers with long and productive residence to eventually become legal residents. I'm sorry, don't let me interrupt.

12. Except she didn't.
"Senator Clinton supports governors like Governor Spitzer...."

She is still not supporting the progam. She is supporting Spitzer.

What people are pretending not to understand is that Spitzer is the DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR of her State. She doesn't want to diss him and his policy. So she is going to say she supports HIM and understands WHY he is doing this, but she isn't going to say "I am against it".

Although at this point, it would be better for her if she did, since they will not allow her to squirm out of denouncing Spitzer without making this into some huge thing, as if her campaign hangs on it. Which is bullshit, of course.

Hillary hesitated. No it's not just me pretending this is an endorsement.

Hillary Embraces Spitzer License Plan

By Big Tent Democrat, Section Elections 2008

After last night's Russert gotcha moment, Senator Hillary Clinton unequivocally embraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's plan to provide drivers licenses for undocumented aliens in New York:

Mrs. Clinton’s statement affirming her support of Mr. Spitzer in his office came less than a day after she offered a muddled and hesitant position on the bill, prompting a round of denunciations by her opponents. It signaled the extent to which her advisers viewed that moment as the biggest misstep she made in the debate, and one with long-term potential to undermine her candidacy. “Senator Clinton supports governors like Governor Spitzer who believe they need such a measure to deal with the crisis caused by this administration’s failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform,’” her campaign said.

Senator John Edwards had lot of criticism for Clinton, but little to say on the actual issue. That little game is over now. Where do you stand on the issue Sen. Edwards? We do not need any doubletalk from you.
