Clinton would cream Giuliani, poll finds

Clinton would cream Giuliani, poll finds
By: David Paul Kuhn
October 31, 2007 04:39 PM EST

One year before voters go to the polls to select the next president, the Republican Party is as weak as it has been in a generation, a detailed new poll suggests.

In a hypothetical matchup between Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, bloc after bloc of traditionally Republican voters break for Clinton:

She wins the South.

She polls evenly with voters who attend church at least once a week.

She splits families with a household income above $100,000.

She loses rural voters and men — but only by a narrow margin.

All are constituencies Republicans have dominated for decades; George W. Bush won each by double-digit margins.

The findings from The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press remain preliminary, considering even the primaries are still two months off.

But Pew questioned an unusually large number of voters to try to paint the most accurate picture possible of where the presidential contest stands today.

Should the race continue down its current trajectory, the poll finds Clinton defeating Giuliani by eight percentage points.

1. I think only Edwards and DK wouldn't do well in the general v AnyGOPer.
I think all the other Democratic candidates would do quite well.

3. Edwards has problems in the NorthEast but he does quite well elsewhere in head to heads.

2. There are many good things for Dems in general in that Pew poll
"In July 2004, the Democratic Party had a slight lead as the party “better able to manage the federal government” and as the party that is “more honest and ethical.”

Today Democrats lead both categories by double-digit margins.

By even larger margins, Democrats are seen as the party “more concerned about people like me” (by 29 percentage points) and the party best able to bring about “needed change” (by 22 percentage points).

Other polling has also showed that for the first time in decades Americans now see the two parties as equally qualified to face down national security threats — erasing the “security advantage” Republicans have long relied on."

<snip>

Only 36 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say the GOP “does an excellent or good job” of “standing up for traditional GOP positions” on issues like reducing the size of government, cutting taxes, and promoting conservative social issues.

That’s a decline of 25 points since July 2004. In fact, it’s the lowest Republican rating for the GOP since Pew began tracking the issue in 2000.

<snip>

Democrats do not have a significantly better view of their party than Republicans do of the GOP, but Democrats have long been skeptical of their tribe.

Republicans, however, have become “increasingly negative,” as Pew puts it, about their party.

And they are falling behind in the party loyalty stakes, Pew interviews of some 20,000 Americans this year have found.

About a third of voters call themselves Democrats and a quarter call themselves Republicans — but when independents’ leanings are added to the mix, roughly half of Americans lean Democratic and only 36 percent lean Republican.

That Democratic advantage in party identity is larger than at any time since tracking began in 1990.

7. What she said last night won't change national
feelings unless you mean the driver's license thing...not a high priority with the average voter IMO.

That issue ALONE can kill her in the general election.
Gray Davis was booted out of office over the outrage of DL's for illegals.

11. Gray Davis had many problems, DL for undocumented workers was but a small one.
What cooked his goose was the registration fee tripling.

12. Gray Davis and the Recall - his position cost him 33% of the recall votes
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 04:51 PM by democrat2thecore
Washington, DC -- {October 8, 2003} Nearly one-third of those who voted in Tuesday's California recall said they were influenced to vote for Gov. Gray Davis' removal by his decision to grant driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Thirty percent of voters said that Davis' approval of the driver's license bill influenced them to support his recall, while only 8 percent said it made them more likely to oppose removing him from office.

In a desperate gambit to hang on to office, Gov. Davis last month signed legislation allowing illegal aliens to obtain California driver's licenses. According to an election night survey by the Luntz Research Companies of voters who participated in Tuesday's recall election, that decision was a serious miscalculation and was a significant factor in the voters' decision to recall the governor.

This is a serious road to ravel down. < Pardon the pun > (The italicized emphasis above was mine)

16. This is what our nominee should say to Giuliani if he's the nominee
Re: Illegals and DL's

Well, Mr. Mayor if you hadn't made your city into a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants, maybe this problem would not be a severe as it is today

He can fool a lot of northeasterners into thinking that he is a moderate, when he would in fact, rarely govern that way.

10. I hope it's him. He is the weakest against Clinton
IMO. First the whole Bill thing will be a non-story since Rudi's personal life is
ten times worse. Also he wants to stay the course a la GW "24%" Bush.
Hillary has said time and time again she wants out of Iraq as soon a possible which is much different than any Republican.

Go find the most recent Quinnipiac poll, and you'll see what I mean. Quite different than this Pew poll.
