Buoyed Edwards Back on the Trail
PORTSMOUTH, N.H., Oct. 31 – Fresh from the Democratic debate last night in Philadelphia, John Edwards returns to New Hampshire today for campaign events and to receive an endorsement from a politically powerful union that promised to support him in this crucial early primary state.

Mr. Edwards’ campaign appeared buoyed by the debate, in which he repeatedly challenged the credentials and credibility of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Within 20 minutes after the debate ended, his staff sent out an email highlighting the reactions to Mr. Edwards performance from 16 Internet and television commentators.

Many of the remarks by Mr. Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, in the debate were familiar to reporters who have covered his recent speeches on the campaign trail. He has consistently derided the system in Washington, D.C. as “broken”; spoken of a rich-poor imbalance in the public school system; criticized Mrs. Clinton for her vote on an amendment against Iran, and spoken of trade agreements that did not work, bringing up the entry of Chinese toys into the American market.

Mr. Edwards will appear today at a rally in Concord, where one of the New Hampshire locals of the Service Employees International Union, Local 1984, will present its endorsement. Local 1984’s State Employees Association, which has 9,000 members, is now working out the details of the support.
