14. I felt it.
5.6 Not a huge one but one that can rattle some nerves if it's right under you. I am about 35 miles north of it and I felt it. It rumbled for a good 5 seconds which is more than the usual little shakes we get.

24. It all depends...
I'd rather be in a cat 1 or 2 hurricane than an 8.5 earthquake myself... I've been through 4 hurricanes so far...no earthquakes yet...

38. CA has only had a couple of really serious quakes in the past 100 years.
Other than the 2 SF quakes and the 1 in LA, others are nothing much. And in the 2 most recent, damage was still fairly limited because newer buildings have earthqake safe construction.

Hurricanes destroy everything in their path, much like a wildfire - far more scary and devastating, as well as much more common than a truly serious quake.

32. We have building codes for hurricanes too but...
on any given day you can have an earthquake without warning but we at least get a couple of days of warning about a hurricane.

I've been in a few quakes when I lived in SF. 6.5 aftershock was the highest in a 12 story building... surf your bedroom!

I hope all is well there.

36. A 5.6 in CA isn't that bad
The majority of the building in that area are new - good building codes. Add a point to that and you have something to fear, add 1.5 and you have some major issues. Fires, earthquakes, droughts, hell at least we don't have tsunamis.

37. technical description of Richter scale
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learning/glossary.php?termID=149

The Richter magnitude scale was developed in 1935 by Charles F. Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a mathematical device to compare the size of earthquakes. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined from the logarithm of the amplitude of waves recorded by seismographs. Adjustments are included for the variation in the distance between the various seismographs and the epicenter of the earthquakes. On the Richter Scale, magnitude is expressed in whole numbers and decimal fractions. For example, a magnitude 5.3 might be computed for a moderate earthquake, and a strong earthquake might be rated as magnitude 6.3. Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; as an estimate of energy, each whole number step in the magnitude scale corresponds to the release of about 31 times more energy than the amount associated with the preceding whole number value.

39. Yes, I felt it.
I'm just northwest of the epicenter. Shook quite a bit, but then I'm a native Californian so it wasn't the first and won't be the last. Woo-hoo.

41. I'm in San Jose and I really felt it!
It's the biggest one I've felt since the Loma Prieta earthquake. The house was rolling and groaning (we live in an 80-year-old house). I kept thinking, "Is this the big one?" But nothing fell off the walls or cupboards and the only thing that spilled was my husband's wine. It was pretty exciting all right! And a reminder to get that earthquake kit together once and for all!
