Obama rejected two BLACK GAY PASTORS for SC campaign event
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 02:35 PM by lamprey
"Several sources inside and outside the campaign confirm the names of TWO openly gay black pastors suggested by the National Black Justice Coalition and the Human Rights Campaign were rejected in favor of Rev. Sidden. Those names are: Bishop Yvette Flunder, an outstanding pastor and orator from San Francisco and Bishop Tonyia Rawls of Unity Fellowship in North Carolina."

http://www.queerty.com/news/barack-rejected-black-gay-ministers-20071026/

The GOP has been working for years at wedging Black Churches from the Democratic Party. That's why McClurkin was at the RNC. Obama's lack of insight, or worse, injures Democrats everywhere.

3. Precisely
this is why this debacle goes way beyond the Hillary-vs.-Obama fight over who sides with more homophobes. People like McClurkin are tailor-made for the GOP wedge to drive between blacks and the LGBT community.

6. And Carlton Pearson, of all people, was rejected too.
"In addition, Bishop Carlton Pearson of Oklahoma, whose inclusive ministry welcomes the LGBT community, was also rejected."

Not only that, but Pearson:

- was dumped by the Church of God in Christ, and is now a bishop in the United Church of Christ -- Obama's own church!

- recorded with Beverly Crawford, one of the performers at this concert. I may not know much about gospel music, but it sure sounds to me like Pearson is hardly unknown to the gospel community.

Pearson pisses off a lot of people with his "Gospel of Inclusion" (he says queers are going to heaven, too! Oh, the horror! :eyes: ) -- but he would have been THE perfect preacher to offset at least some of the taint of the Bigot Tour. (And he's not even gay.)

45. There was a special on that guy Pearson. I really like him. He talked
about how he "saw the light" that Hell is a place on earth and if Jesus came to save the earth then everyone is saved and not just the "born agains". He had a mega church and lost everything because he dared to say that everyone was equal.

He lost his church. He lost everything because of his "radical ideas" but he stayed with his beliefs and then he was brought on by a lesbian preacher and he is now just as popular as ever because great of that church; well not just as popular since he is not in a mega church but he is really popular with the people that the regular "loving church of Jesus" shuns.

I swear that guy is real. I think it was a special on MSNBC.

I wonder if Obama is a member of Pearson's old church or his new church. They are quite different.

37. Well, there are 2 options and neither one is good
1) He was courting the homophobe vote and hoped nobody else would notice or 2) he honestly believes that being gay is a choice and you can get straight with a little bit o' prayer.

Either way, he's toast.

20. Someone does have to call Obama on it.
I (half) joking called the SC concerts Obama's Southern Strategy. Surely last thing we need is a candidate using a textbook Rovian play against other Democrats. It's low level dynamite. I can barely believe the irony of what "inclusive" means in this context.

25. they seem to think when they spew hate, it's okay
I know who I am. I know I work hard for equal treatment under the law in all applications, but it isn't just for the LGBT community. Unfortunately some of the more militant haters aren't interested or concerned about anything outside their narcissistic bubble and probably have no real clue what is being done on their behalf.

I hold everyone accountable to the same standard of civilized behavior, and one's sexual orientation does not, in fact, make them exempt from that.

29. Is civilized behavior carelessly lobbing "racist" and "bigot?"
Funny how the haters can't quite grasp the concept that we are all human beings accountable for our own behavior and one's sexual orientation does not make them exempt for that standard.

Bah-bye.

32. Oh, are you being accused of mean things?
How would you like to get fired from your job because of whom you love? Or maybe get arrested? Maybe you'd like to get kicked out of your apartment? Or maybe you'd like to be beaten and left for dead hanging from a fence in the snow, so that your family finds your frozen bloody dead body in the morning?

38. There are all kinds of inequities.
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 05:23 PM by AtomicKitten
Here's a vignette: How would you like being the sole support and care of two children and having surgery for suspected metastasis, in the hospital 10 days, and coming home and finding two letters firing you from your job and having your lease rescinded - both illegally - because you were sidelined with the surgery and for no other reason?

Just an example of a day in the life of a single parent dealing with prejudice and abject disregard.

We don't have to compare wounds to know it ain't easy for anybody out there.
