John Edwards: Talked, shook hands, I got the autograph, and the W Post interviewed me
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 06:32 PM by Omaha Steve

Edit for sp.

What a day. Senator Edwards was in Glenwood Iowa this morning. I took the day off and made the 1/2 hour drive. Marta couldn't get out of work today unfortunately. I arrived about an hour ahead of his scheduled time of 10:30. I killed time by mingling and explaining I crossed the river to attend etc... About 20 minutes before the program was to start, I was asked if I would like to sit on the stage, behind where the Senator would be talking. I couldn't say yes fast enough. I sat in the front-center of the two rows. I'm in a day glow yellow AFSCME shirt with an "Edwards 08 and unions, stand together" button on.

As the next "President of the United states" was introduced to the roar of a full room, he started shaking hands. When he got to the stage he continued to shake hands. He reached out for my hand. Over the continued applause, I told him I'm an AFSCME member. I got a smile and a look of approval. AFSCME will bring big $ and volunteers to the November cycle.

The Senator started his speech without a script. He talked for about ten minutes before starting a Q&A session. I took a couple of phone photos at this time. (I wish I knew how to DL these to my PC.) I believe he hit a home run with the crowd for his open honesty on all the issues.

When he got the signal it was time to wrap up, he started working the room. One of the aides I talked to before hand said follow me. I got to shake his hand again. I quickly talked about the labor movement. Then how I would work to get the two Nebraska AFSCME local's to endorse him BEFORE the January third Iowa caucus. Not much money, but great PR in it. He then was surprised at the photo I took to get autographed. He asked where it was taken. I told the story of seeing it in a Washington Post story of his summer vacation. I told him I'd find a way to get him a copy. I let him know a fellow DUer was kind enough to search the net to find just this photo for the occasion after I couldn't find it. I also mentioned of all the candidates, he leads the pack in funds raised by the DU by a huge margin. I hope to post a scan of the signed photo over the weekend. I have to wait on Marta to get a free moment. I have no idea how she does these things. :-) Here is the vacation photo.

I walked away with my folder and photo. I watched the delight in the eyes of other people he talked to and shook hands with. A young lady came over and identified herself as a reporter for the Washington Post. What a day doesn't say enough. She asked about the photo. I told her I stole it from the Post. She laughed and said it wasn't stealing. I started with how I voted for Edwards in the Nebraska May primary in 2004. It was obvious then Kerry would win the nomination. I voted hoping to get Edwards on the ticket. I covered how I had been supporting Gore until around June 20th or so. Once I decided he wouldn't enter the race, I got on the Edwards bandwagon and haven't looked back. I covered the other candidates and said nothing negative about any of them. We then talked about the Senator's Q&A session. There was a question at the end about the war from a younger fellow. Great answer. I wish I had the event on tape. I felt he had pleased the crowd of the red part of the state.

Should anyone see coverage of the event or interview, please PM me.

Regards,

Omaha Steve

2. Congratulations on a wonderful day. (I'm not going to be snarky at all.)
To all the Iowans (Debi, I think?), the New Hampshirites (New Hampster), and people like you just "over the river" in Nebraska, the rest of us are jealous!
It's fun to hear real-people stories about this race from fellow DUers. :toast:

3. Thanks for the recap
Sounds like you had a great day!! :woohoo:

I can see why you chose that photo -- that is an awesome picture of the Edwards family.

Thanks for sharing this -- and I would like to see a tape of the event as well! Hopefully someone will post a link??

On the phone thing, if it is internet enabled, you can email it to yourself. If not, you can attach your phone to your PC with a USB cable or MAC with a Firewire cable and you can share photos between phone and computer, back and forth. Check with your local phone provider -- they should sell these if you don't already have one.

5. I got to meet & talk to Edwards in Columbus, OH a few weeks ago.
.... As he was leaving the stage he stopped to talk to an elderly lady
who couldn't stand and so was sitting in a chair. John got down so
he could speak to her face to face. He acted like she was the only
person in the room .... she got so overwhelmed that she started to
cry and thanked him for speaking to her. John held her face between
his hands and thanked her for coming and it was his honor to speak
to her. The man is the real deal and his emotions and care for that
lady was 100% honest.

I think that the other side knows Edwards is our best bet to win in
a landslide and will go out of their way to attack him and spread
lies so as to kill his chances.

Thank you for your post.

20. K and R
Edwards is strong with the unions. To be fair, AFSCME endorsed Clinton yesterday. Given your union, what motivates you to work or vote for Edwards and possibly not for Clinton in the primaries?

I think he is the union's friend, myself.

22. AFSCME's Endorsement Process: It isn't official yet!

Our President is good friends with the Clintons. AFSCME was one of the first to endorse Bill in 92. I hope they stick to their guns and wait until at least April first before making an endorsement. Local's are free to endorse their choice until the national decides.

President Gerald W. McEntee: http://www.afscme.org/about/740.cfm

http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/10/afscmes_endorsement_process.php

AFSCME's Endorsement Process

24 Oct 2007 09:00 am

Larry Scanlon, the political director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, confirms for us that AFSCME's presidential search committee hasn't recommended endorsing Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential candidate just yet.

On October 30 -- the same day the Democrats debate in Philadelphia -- the search committee will meet to decide whether to endorse and if so, who they ought to endorse. The next day, members of the International Executive Board of AFSCME meet.

By November 1, as Howard Fineman predicts, it should be clear to the world whether AFSCME has decided to endorse Hillary Clinton. All signs point to yes.

A side note: watch for the New Hampshire branch of the Service Employees to endorse a different candidate very soon.

Thanks for the great report! PLEASE continue to talk with your fellow union members urge them to support Sen. Edwards! I unfortunately read that AFSCME is going endorse Clinton next Thursday.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21435796/

Unfortunately the president of AFSCME, Gerald McEntee, is in the back pocket of Clinton and I believe your membership is being sold up the river. The Clinton's are no friends of labor unions.

Thanks and keep up the support for Edwards!

29. I So So Very Much WISH He Can "Bust It Open" AND Try To Get
America headed back to what it used to be!!! He has a MOUNTAIN to climb because the likes of the D.C. Elites, and the likes of Chuck Schumer and Rahm Emanuel will stop at NOTHING to keep him from becoming the Democratic nominee!!! You were so LUCKY and I wish I had been there. I DID get to shake his hand once, after I climbed all over everyone in front of me!

And it will be more shame for America if we keep letting the DLC take over! We have been bought and sold over and over again! It must take every fiber of one's being to run against this ESTABLISHED corporative, lobbying power to try to reach out for OUR COUNTRY!

Say what you will about Edwards, but I sincerely believe that he and Elizabeth really care deeply about this country and want to make CHANGES! The mountain is high, and those on top are throwing boulders at them as they climb!!

All I can say is... Go, Johnny, Go!

not even to DNC anymore. I know he won't be coming way down here to Florida, but my heart is with him!! I know there's a LOT of support out there for him, many people I talk to say the same thing. I really needed this post today, I kind of crawled under the covers to shut the world out today! Too much negativity got me down and my revulsion for what is happening to this country these days.

Unless and UNTIL MSM stops pushing Hillary it's going to be rough going!! I talk him up all the time!!!

30. Thanks everyone - esp Omaha Steve...
...for the diary, photos, and the video. John Edwards has been, and remains, my favorite candidate. I think he's the only chance we have to reverse the parasitic corprat scourge that is sucking the lifeblood out of this country. He's made his fortune and himSELF fighting them, and he is therefore uniquely qualified to continue doing that for us in the White House as our President. Otherwise, we will only end up with continued government of, by, and for, big corporations and 'we the people' will still be left in the background, in Slow Destroy mode.

It has to stop and I think it just might stop or at LEAST be slowed down with John Edwards as President.

50. Thanks and a question
Great write up Omaha!

I was wondering, it seems JE has the best chance to catch a pass Hillary. I think JE could win in EVERY region of the country. Frustratingly, the M$M continues to tout HRC as the anointed one and the presumptive nominee.

I don't get (nor want to believe) why he continues to lag behind HRC in the polls. Hopefully, Iowa will change that on 1/3/08.

QUESTION: Did John express or suggest any optimism to counter the Hillary is inevitable assumption? I really think John needs more voters to make the psychological leap to HE CAN WIN!

BTW, if I sound like a JE supporter - I'm still with DK, but as much as I'd LOVE for Al Gore or Dennis Kucinich to be president, it's not happening. So I fall back to being realistic and realistically, I think JE can (and hopefully will) beat Hillary to win our party's nomination.

During the Kerry campaign I watched him hang over railing to shake hands while a secret service agent hung onto his belt to keep him from falling.
I hope a whole lot of people in Iowa are as impressed by him as I am.
