Obama: I will filibuster FISA bill if telecom immunity is not stripped from it
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 07:38 PM by DemFemme
From Obama spokesman Bill Burton today:

'... Obama to get Chris Dodd's back on the threatened filibuster:

"Senator Obama has serious concerns about many provisions in this bill, especially the provision on giving retroactive immunity to the telephone companies.
He is hopeful that this bill can be improved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. But if the bill comes to the Senate floor in its current form, he would support
a filibuster of it."'

************

Obama on the record on October 18, 2007:

“I have consistently opposed this Administration's efforts to use debates about our national security to expand its own power, whether that was on the Iraq war,
or on its power grab to curb our civil liberties through domestic surveillance programs. It is time to restore oversight and accountability in the FISA program,
and this proposal -- with an unprecedented grant of retroactive immunity -- is not the place to start.”

Biden has subsequently joined Dodd and Obama. Can Hillary be far behind?

Along with Biden and as expected, Hillary is bringing up the rear. All who join the filibuster
(call your senators!) should be commended.

11. RE "Can Hillary be far behind?"
It's in her best interest to urge the Judiciary Committee to drop phone company immunity.

If they don't and she supports the filibuster, then the Republicans will say she's against listening in on calls by terrorists (Bush said that about Democrats at the 2004 RNC in NYC.)

If they don't and she votes for cloture, then she'll anger activists like us.

16. Thanks for the update. With all four Senators...
...running for the Democratic nomination supporting a filibuster (Dodd, Biden, Obama, and Clinton), hopefully at least 37 other Senators will join them.

4+37=41 and means that the filibuster holds.

28. He will if Reid doesn't pull another bait-and-switch
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 05:46 AM by DemFemme
"The reason Obama did not vote is not because he didn't show up. He did show up for the scheduled vote. Harry Reid canceled it below quote]. When he rescheduled it for the next morning, Reid (whose son works for Clinton campaign) let Obama know only 1
hour in advance. Obama was in New Hampshire at the time and it was impossible to make it back to Washington. Obama did, however
issue out a statement that same day on how he would have voted if he had the opportunity."

http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2008/clinton/clintonorgnv.html

Coincidentally, Harry Reid's son is a paid staff member for Hillary Clinton in Denver. He's the Clark County Commission Chairman and
his name is Rory Reid.

*********

"Mr. REID: Mr. Chairman, there will be no more votes tonight. We have tried to work something out on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment
and the Biden amendment. We have been unable to do that. We have been very close a few times, but we have just been informed
that Senator Biden will not have a vote anytime in the near future. There will not be a vote on the other one anytime in the near future.
We hope tonight will bring more clearness on the issue."

Dodd started the ball rolling, Obama got his back yesterday, soon followed by Biden and Hillary - in that order.
Hopefully the quartet can convince 38 more Senators to join them (call your senators!).
