Pelosi: I would not give Congress high marks on ending the war
By Klaus Marre
October 14, 2007

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that she would not give Congress high marks with regard to ending the war in Iraq, adding that she understands voter dissatisfaction on the issue that has sent the congressional approval rating tumbling.

Pelosi said Democrats are “doing all we can to change the debate” but stressed that they do not have the kind of power that the White House has.

The speaker, in an interview aired on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” stated it was ironic that, as an outspoken opponent to the Iraq campaign, anti-war activists are targeting her now. However, Pelosi added that she understands and respects the frustrations of the Democratic base.

“We will continue to pass legislation to make that point ,” she said. “And we happen to be blocked by a 60-vote hurdle in the Senate, but the public doesn’t want -- care about that. They just want us to end the war.”

Pelosi also said that she would not bring up to a vote language that designates Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization. The measure had passed in the Senate earlier this year.

4. It's so pitiful that this is the best we can do
and no matter who gets elected in 08, nothing will change - face it folks, we are screwed

America the corporatist fascist state has been realized by both the Repukes and the Democratic enablers - and the sheep will continue to boil in the lobster pot

5. Hmmmm
interesting that someone who hasn't 'made the grade' is
passing judgement and grading others.

6. At least she acknowledged that she/they haven't done enough.
Isn't recognizing the problem a start? Hopefully? Unless she means there is nothing more she can do. Oh, crap.

7. Bill & Hil have that kind of power
If Congress is not aggressively seeking to end the war, it's because they don't want Congress to. I would say it's a political calculation, except for the fact that she said failure in Iraq is not an option, back in 2003, along with needing to "stay the course", bla bla bla.

8. she should bring up a withdrawal bill once a week
and every week, until this damn thing ends. so you don't have the votes? make these bastards vote for war every single week, and make the president veto an end to the war every single week, and make them all go explain to their constituents why they'd rather protect the president than America.

for the most part i think nancy is on our side (the end the war side) but i still don't think she's doing enough. they want this war around the neck of the GOP so they can use it in the elections next year.

9. Lier!!! Congress have all the power with respect to funding.
White House cannot get the money unless the congress gives it.
41 votes in the senate or simple majority in the house is enough to de-fund the war if they want to.

Maybe after the election. I believe dems are playing politics and trying to keep the war issue alive until after the election.

So blood of our soldiers that are dead and will die while they are playing politics are on their hands as well as white house. Not even mentioning mountain of debt this war brought on us.

10. I really don't understand how Madame Squeaker impressed her colleagues
sufficiently to get the majority of their votes to elect her speaker. She is so unimpressive.

George was so gentle with her today. What is wrong with him? In spite of that, Madame came off as weak. She needs to go. Twenty years in office does not entitle her to twenty more.
