Obama Knocked Off Top Spot on Facebook
It's Facebook day here on MoJoBlog! The two posts we've had about it today (here's the first) may be two more than we've ever had.

Here's the occasion for the second post: The candidate-based Facebook group that had the most members for many, many months — "Barack Obama (One Million Strong for Barack)" — has finally been topped. And it's been topped by Hillary Clinton, but not in a good way for the New York senator.

The group "Stop Hillary Clinton (One Million Strong AGAINST Hillary)" has more than 418,000 members, which beats Obama's 355,000 members. And it crushes any pro-Clinton groups, the two biggest of which combine for just under 10,000 members.

So Hillary Fever isn't catching on with the kids. Obama's campaign is very aware of the advantage it has among this demographic, and has made it a crucial part of its Iowa strategy.

15. Actually, they are
Hillary is doing very well among college students, and running a close second to Obama. How do I know? Well, I'm a college student. IIRC, national polls show her neck-in-neck with Obama among young people, and she came in second in a straw poll done last week at my university (Obama was first, Kucinich third, and Edwards fourth).

Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 09:43 PM by jenmito
I'm sure nobody from the GOP/RNC is in there. They all want her to be the Dem. nominee so the Repubs. have a motivation to go out and vote for whomever the Repub. nominee is.

seen any polls lately? It's not "only the GOP" and frankly, I know a lot of Republicans who are terrified of her because they think she *will* beat them.

26. Hillary? Polarizing? Wow, I'd never heard that before!
Of course I read the OP, but I think any one of our nominees is going to be made polarizing in the general (John Kerry, anybody?) but it's something that Hillary already knows how to deal with, IMO.

35. You obviously can't tell the difference between a NON-polarizing Dem. like Obama
and THE MOST polarizing Dem-Hillary. Why aren't we seeing any other candidate have an "anti" facebook page besides her?

of course Hillary is polarizing - did I deny that? I'm merely pointing out that someone like Obama, who isn't currently a very polarizing figure, could (and almost certainly would) become one in a general election.

41. I sure did...
you said you "think any one of our nominees is going to be made polarizing in the general." My point is nobody IS as polarizing as Hillary. The GOP will try their best to motivate their base to vote against WHOMEVER our nominee is...but as seen in these polls, they won't even have to TRY with Hillary. Many more Repubs. and Indys just can't stand her compared to Obama.

29. Clinton is the candidate that gives the republicans the best chance.
She will get more republicans that would have stayed home a reason to get out and vote and she has too many democrats that don't believe in her and what she says she stands for. That and her new view of the war looking more like Bushs view on things. I think most Americans agree that we need out of this war.

28. Gee, none of those asswipes couldn't possibly be Mitt Romney or Giuliani supporters, could they?
I mean really--what Democrat would join such a group? That's just STUPID. Most politically active Democrats (and I mean really active--not "sit at the keyboard and gripe" active) have better things to do supporting their OWN candidate within the party, getting out the word on why their candidate is best, rather than shitting on others.

After all, once the primary is over, we all have to get along. Only idiots burn bridges.

Is there a One Million Strong Against Obama group, too?

If there isn't, well, then he needs to get more of those Republicans frightened. Because that's what this effort looks like--the work of frightened Republicans.

Sounds to me like that little outfit was put together at RNC headquarters.
