Former General To Stump For Obama In S.C.

Gen. Tony McPeak to Stump for Obama in South Carolina

Former Air Force Chief of Staff to address Obama's plans to get us out of Iraq and honor America's veterans

Gen. Merrill "Tony" McPeak, former Air Force Chief of Staff, will hold events across South Carolina Friday and Saturday to talk about U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's plans for keeping America safe and restoring its reputation on the world stage.

McPeak, who is also a national Obama campaign co-chair, has been invited to The Citadel as a guest of the campus Young Democrats Club to discuss national security on Friday, and he'll headline events in Columbia and Greenville on Saturday.

Before retiring as Air Force Chief of Staff in 1994, McPeak oversaw planning for Operation Desert Storm. He served in the Air Force's acrobatic flying team The Thunderbirds, and flew 269 combat missions in Vietnam from 1968-1970.

McPeak campaigned for Bob Dole in 1996, and endorsed George W. Bush for president in 2000. He began voicing strong objections to Bush foreign policy in the run-up to the Iraq war and became a signatory for the Committee of Diplomats & Commanders for Change, which opposed Bush's re-election because they believed he had failed to preserve America's national security. He has a master's degree in international relations from George Washington University.

4. Not Clark, but no slouch......
He retired in 1994, and hails from California. Was a declared Republican who voted for Bush in 2000.

"In 1996, McPeak served as Oregon state chairman for the Bob Dole for President campaign. During the presidential election of 2000 McPeak endorsed George W. Bush and served as co-chairman of Oregon Veterans for Bush. <1>

As the military and foreign policy of the Bush administration coalesced, however, McPeak expressed strong objections, especially with regard to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. McPeak later openly campaigned for Howard Dean's nomination, and when Dean withdrew, acted as an adviser for the John Kerry campaign. He was also one of twenty-seven signatories to the statement of the "Committee of Diplomats & Commanders for Change" calling the Bush Administration a failure at "preserving national security" and calling for Bush not to be re-elected.
