Cleaver discusses his support for Sen. Clinton

They met one-on-one in a private room on the Senate side of Congress. Each expressed concerns on a multitude of pertinent issues.

Before leaving the room, Sen. Hillary Clinton asked for a big favor.

She asked U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver to support her candidacy for president of the United States. Cleaver was frank with the senator. He told her he was struggling to make a decision. In fact, he explained that he just might have to stay on the sidelines and remain neutral. Making political enemies was Cleaver’s concern.

For weeks after that meeting, Cleaver weighed his options.
