"Sen. Macawitz" takes to morning talk radio to restart political career
http://www.timesdispatch.com/cva/ric/news/politics.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2007-08-23-0152.html

George Allen, unemployed politician, is trying yet another way to get back into his old line of work.

Defeated in November for a second term in the U.S. Senate, the Republican yesterday filled in for morning announcer Jimmy Barrett on WRVA (1140 AM), the third-most-listened-to radio station in the Richmond area and one that carries some of the conservative commentators with whom Allen shares an ideological bond.

Allen praised Thompson as a foe of "remote, nanny government" and someone who "understands NASCAR and country music" -- two passions of the cowboy-boot-wearing Virginian.

Allen did not disclose his pick for the GOP nomination but perhaps telegraphed a possible preference for Thompson when, in announcing WRVA's online straw poll, asked listeners whether they would vote for Thompson or "someone else."

Mark J. Rozell, a political analyst at George Mason University, said Allen apparently believes he was treated unfairly by the political news correspondents and is now trying "to present himself and reinvent himself directly to the public."

And during a phone chat with U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., Allen urged the public to resist reinstatement of the "Fairness Doctrine" that forced broadcasters to air opposing views and is decried as unnecessary government meddling.

3. Good lord. I half expect George Allen to run for president on a ticket
with David Duke.

We owe Jim Webb an enormous thankyou for taking Allen out of the Senate, and especially out of the presidential sweepstakes.

Allen, to me, represents the very worst of public service. He's cynical, proudly uninformed, and plays to the good-ol-boy bigots at the country club lounge.

Yuck.

4. Yeah but as you watch the Repubicans remember-it was supposed to be Felix
George Felix Allen

He was absolutely primed for a WH run. Reagan republican, ended parole, cowboy hat, boots, NASCAR the whole bit and then *POOF* it all went away in 40 seconds.

5. Yep. He was the much-touted George Allen and I was very edgy over
the demograhics.

Fortunately he is one of the biggest and most arrogant fools who ever got up and walked, and did himself in.

The Webb campaign was beautifully run and manned and womaned by some tough, clear-headed, extraordinarily competent people, from the top rung down to the most anonymous grassroots folks in western Virginia, and they shoved hard and Felix lost.

It's a MUCH healthier Senate without people like Allen and Santorum.

6. Now THAT is one hell of a headline!
"Macacawitz" really gets the mileage out of a couple of insults teed off on his oh-so-obvious-to-everyone-but-himself bigotry, or bugotry, as needed.

8. The Webb victory was uncomfortably close. Felix has
fed at the public trough for so long, he doesn't know any other way to make a living - all protestations about "big government" aside. (Ever notice that the r morons who bitch and moan about "big government" don't seem to mind collecting a big government paycheck and pension.) I suspect he'll be trying for a political comeback sooner rather than later.

10. Uncomfortably close, but, realistically, never should have happened.

Incumbant Senator - and presumed Presidential candidate - in a southern state blows a nearly 20-point lead at one point entirely through self-inflicted gaffes and other damage and loses to a political "rookie."

Webb had no realistic shot, and if Allen hadn't even campaigned, he would still be Senator. Incumbant Senators just don't lose like he did.

11. I think Webb would have made it a close race anyway, but

you are right, Allen did himself in.

By the way, I went to high school with Allen and posted here years ago about what a racist idiot he was even back then. He once spraypainted racist graffiti all over the walls of the school and was suspended for it. He also carried around a baseball bat with the words "n_____ knocker" on it. A group of classmates were interviewed a year ago for a New Republic piece published last April which chronicled Allen's lifelong love affair with the Confederacy (strange for a kid raised in Southern Cal) and his overt racism. But the corporate press ignored it, until the Macaca outburst. That was very mild by actual Allen standards, but it was enough to get him into serious trouble. I don't think he could have withstood the scrutiny of a Presidential campaign. Too many skeletons in the closet.

9. Ah yes, the guy that managed to lose an incumbant VIRGINIA Senate seat.
And the Republican Senate, all due to his own big mouth and YouTube.

At least he got himself a prominant place in political science books.
