Why exactly is Thompson such a threat to us again?

Thompson on running: 'We’ll be in'

Watch Thompson discuss his views on gay marriage and Roe v. Wade.

DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) – Likely Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson told CNN Friday that he plans to enter the race for the White House “shortly.”

“We are going to be getting in if we get in, and of course, we are in the testing the waters phase,” he said, adding, “we’re going to be making a statement shortly that will cure all of that. But yeah, we’ll be in traditionally when people get in this race,” he told CNN’s John King in an interview Friday.

Showing his conservative stripes, Thompson said he would push for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and would overturn Roe v. Wade.

So this jackass would overturn Roe v. Wade as president? He just lost about a couple of million votes right there.

1. Because he's a Republican
and if he gets the nomination he'll have all the corporate money and media support he could ask for.

8. That too
Anybody on this site who thinks the 2008 campaign is going to be some kind of walkover against any of the Republican candidates (except maybe Brownback and Tancredo, neither of whom are going to win the nom) is going to be very disappointed.

14. If I had money to bet
I'd put it all on a Republican victory (and a honest one at that) in '08.

The Democrats have given the country nothing to vote for, a vote against Republicans may help, but it will not close the deal.

Well, at least we know he is a true republican because he takes to the Royal "we"...

5. His Momentum Turned to Joe-Mentum About 3 Weeks Ago
Even the easily duped Freepers are starting to see through this jackass. For awhile they were acting like he was some kind of savior, every time I hear him talk, he sounds like an older version of GWB. If he ever actually SAID anything or had an idea in his head I'd about fall off my chair. He's attempting to be the Guy In The Ronald Reagan mask, but really even that only appeals to the 26% of the people who still like President Chucklnuts. How to appeal to the 26% - AND sane people? They need ALL the 26% and a big chunk of sane people.

That's a dilemma that I haven't seen any of them show any signs of being able to pull off.

6. Because most people are stupid
and will vote for a guy who is able to deliver 30 second sound bites in a deep resonate voice. It happened with Reagan and can happen again.

The thing about being an actor is that you are good at being believable in whatever role you are playing. Fred will play Reagan and the sheeple will believe him.

7. Hey check out this Bush-esque statement:
"One of the big problems has been the Supreme Court have gotten up on a particular side of the bed in the morning wanting to change social policy because of their view of changes in society," he said. "That's the wrong way to go."

Brilliant...! :eyes:

it's a version of the THomasScaliaAlito view.

A conservative ruling = wise jurisprudence
A liberal ruling = dangerous judicial activism

10. He's got a soul!?!?
No Way!!!

Unfortunately, he's had years of "Law & Order" to cement his appearance of being a friendly, folksy, Republican. Hopefully, enough people will be able to see though him.

13. He also wants to eliminate income taxes
He supports what he calls a "fair tax" , eliminating the income tax and impose consumption taxes, which would shift the tax burden to low and middle income taxpayers.

15. its Al Gore Syndrome
popular when he's not officially in the campaign, but if an official announcement is made, the poll numbers drop precipitously. I'm not flaming Al Gore, just pointing out this is how it has historically worked. Same thing applies with Kennedy in '80, Goldwater in '64.

So no need to worry about Thompson; he's peaked, not that it looks like he'll make it official.

19. He isn't. Once he enters, he'll tank. The only real threats on the GOP side, other than election
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 07:29 PM by trayted
theft, are Chuck Hagel and Mike Huckabee.

They are strong general election candidates. If the GOP ran a Hagel/Huckabee ticket, the Democratic Party would lose in a landslide.

Pray that Hagel doesn't enter the race. Hagel is made for a General Election, and his 100% conservative group ratings would be more than enough for GOPers. Republicans look for a "leader." Their party faithful would dump Bush and move on to the next thing. What Hagel says would become gospel for Joe Republican, and if Hagel said it's time to get out of Iraq, they would acquiesce. Hagel would win 75% of Independents, all Republicans, and 10% of Democrats and crush us in the General Election.

Huckabee is only strong because he's a real Republican who gets the religious voters stirred up. Right now, many religious voters are resigned to sit out 2008. No need to give them a reason to show up.

will confuse his role on TV with reality.

Image is a big factor.
