Iowa Governor Wants January CaucusesBy Jeff Zeleny
DES MOINES – The 2008 presidential campaign should start
– and finish – in 2008.
That’s the view of Gov. Chet Culver of Iowa, who pledged
today to do everything he could to keep the Iowa caucuses,
which traditionally kick off the nominating process, from being
held in December.
As he walked into the Capitol today, Mr. Culver carried a copy
of The Des Moines Register, which had a front-page banner
headline: “December caucuses a possibility.”
In an interview, Mr. Culver said he would do whatever he could
to prevent the race from starting that early.
“We’re not going in December,” he said. “It just doesn’t make
sense.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa's Democratic governor said Friday
the state's presidential caucuses should be held in January 2008,
rejecting suggestions that the rush to move up primaries should
push the contests into December.
“In this state, we're going to still have Christmas,” Gov. Chet
Culver said at a news conference. “We're very firm in the fact
that we're going to have the caucuses in January. To go into
2007 makes no sense at all.”
