Is Kerry Developing Teflon Or Are The Republicans Just Dopey?
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 03:04 PM by DrFunkenstein
Ed "Dizzy" Gillespie, Rush "Anal Cyst" Limbaugh, and the rest of the motley crew have been unloading the big guns pretty earlier - before the primaries are even fully decided.

If their plan is to throw out what they can about Kerry to see what sticks and what slides, it seems to have an effect they weren't counting on - the fragrant scent of desperation.

The big guns so far have proven fairly limp thus far:

Hanoi John - Kerry was actually within a half-mile of Jane Fonda! Zoinks! He must be a soldier-hating commie pinko!

Kerry's on the take
- Believe it or not, Kerry has taken as much from "special interests" as Bush pulled in from Enron alone! Would you trust this man?

Kerry took part in the Winter Soldier hearings
- Well, actually he didn't, and the minute he saw the disrespectful cover on his book, he had it immediately removed and tried to collect the copies that already went out. As far war atrocities, that they happened is well-documented, and Kerry never suggested that they were committed by every soldier in Vietnam. The fact that he protested the Free Fire Zone policy (high civilian casualties) while in Vietnam, yet continued to fight, indicates he is neither the self-promoter nor hippie radical the Right is suggesting. Nice try, though.

The Smudge Report
- Arnold Schwarzenneger once sagaciously declared, "Where there is smoke, there is fire - that is true." Well, clearly someone is blowing smoke up somewhere. Unfortunately for Smudge, the right wing talk radio, and about half of DU, there is no fire. The lady denied it, as did her folks - who said they'd vote Kerry. Silly rabbits.

Does anyone else notice a pattern here? As in, the GOP desperately reach for anything to get people thinking about anything besides the fact that Bush got his teeth checked in Alabama.

Maybe they should just ask Cheney what "other priorities" caused him to defer his service over and over again on his way to conquering the Middle East single-handedly, or why the Pentagon chickenhawks systematically ignored the advice of combat veterans in the State Department.

In the meantime, Kerry is coming out of all this smelling like a rose and making it clear that he's not going to Dukakis-out on us.

1. If they keep it up, folks may just tune them out.
Some would see it as crying "Wolf" too many times with no wolf in sight, and others just don't like seeing someone getting piled on in such craven manner. At some point it is just not a good strategy to continue to smear and attack. But, hey, maybe we could egg them on a bit, get some popcorn and sit back and watch the implosion. Kerry's dignity is one of his best defenses. :D

2. Thank Goodness.
Teflon. A wonderful product, if used for good works. :)Hazardous in the wrong hands, though.

3. Kerry doesn't need teflon, the Repubs are desperate because we're
framing this debate and not going to put up with the RW politics as usual. Bring it on!

10. how do you figure
that we're framing the debate?

Seriously - are Democratic party issues on the table? I see war, I see gay marriage, defense, and a whole lot of other things that are totally driven by the right wing. Kerry has become the chosen one, as a response to the right wing - only a military man could reassure the voters, and compete with *. It's hard to imagine a more poignant example of the party pandering to the right.

The right wing is absolutely dictating the Democratic response to gay marriage - otherwise Kerry would be defending it, instead of waffling around about it.

11. Kerry is trying to get that issue defused and off the table
If we lose the election over that one issue I'll scream.

NOT Disrespectful

A flag flying upside down is the sign of distress. Our nation during the Vietnam era was in a state of distress.

Personally, I think the cover was perfectly appropriate.

7. That teflon is called "the Internet", and it works for any Dem...
with the brains to use the information on it, and the balls to
stand up to the BFEE.

Dean was the first to stumble across Internet Teflon. Clark
also had a thin coating of same. Kerry now inherits the broad-
based community of disenfranchised liberals with talent and
time to use the net.

I am all for Teflon for the Dem nominee whoever he is.

12. Give it time.
They're not going to bring down the weakest candidate before he wins the nomination. Once he's the nod, all bets are off and he's going to be pulled down by the Republican machine faster than you can say John Kerry looks like a horse.

13. Kerry never said our military might no longer be the world's strongest
but Dean did. And in most everyone's book that makes Dean weak.

You need to take Dean off your pedestal and remove the rosy glasses.
He would have been skewered and turned on a spit in the general election.
Just because you can talk loud and yell and scream doesn't mean you are right.

15. Saw Brit Hume Say...
That Kerry was soft on defense because he said he wanted to be the Jobs President, Health Care President, etc. and wrapped it up by saying we can't do much of anything if we aren't secure. Brit Hume (why do they all go for smug?) suggested that Kerry was wimpy because he put security last.

This is how desperate they are. Smell the fear.
