38. I Have No Preference, Myself, Sir, At This Point
Sens. Clinton, Edwards , and Obama all would make an excellent President, and all are capable of making an excellent campaign in the general election.

10. She has sounded good in the debates.
I would like to know two things. Please ask her for me.

1) Does she support Bill Clinton's initiatives in 1997 to persuade the European Parliament to rescind laws that protected the privacy of the European's telephone call records and records of other electronic communications? (At that time the surveillance was justified by the need to prevent identity theft. It is now justified by the need to catch terrorists.)

2) Does she realize that her supporter, Rupert Murdoch, is in turn supported by Saudi Arabia? What would she do if the person she appointed as Attorney General or one of the U.S. Attorneys she appointed began an investigation of Rupert Murdoch and others who are financially supported by the Saudi Arabians or if there were a large scale prosecution of people in the pay of the Saudi Arabians for treason? Would she try to silence or end such prosecutions?

These issues are likely to arise in the next months. Please tell all of us DUers how Hillary answers these questions. I hate to flame and I want to say that Edwards is my favorite candidate. Up to the last few days, I have said I would vote for any Democrat. I would like to be able to continue to say that, but I have become genuinely concerned about Clinton's candidacy in the light of information I have learned in the last couple of days about Bill Clinton's role in the surveillance projects and about the possibility that the Clintons accept Saudi money in a round about way. I was always a big fan of Bill's. Now I'm not so sure.

See for youself:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/moderators.html

All she has to do is perform her duties in a neutral manner. It appears moderators are allowed to express their own thought an opinions, as long as it's understood that when they post in a thread about an issue they're speaking for themselves and not DU, and that they do so in a civil manner.

As long as she can still do all of this, I don't see the problem.

34. Perhaps it's not in the 'rulez', but there's such a thing as 'prudence' and
good judgement.

We ALL make mistakes.....but this mod didn't have to announce which campaign she was gonna work for. The mod could have left it neutral (i.e., "Hey I'm working for one of the Dem candidates campaigns!!!!")

Something to consider for the future, I guess.

Peace,

I always found it best to stay out of the primary wars. I was a big Dean supporter in 2003-2004, but didn't really participate in the GD forums. However, displaying a candidate's avatar is a bit questionable, but I'll allow the Admins to handle that internally.

However, I checked with other moderators before posting some of the things that I did about Lieberman and recused myself from decision making if I thought I was biased.

At least from my experience, the mods do an excellent job of keeping their political views and their decisions separate.

Clinton ended the ban on production and importation of PCBs, stopped the phase out of Methyl Bromide (a toxic pesticide and ozone layer depleter), supported the weakening of the safe drinking water act (by allowing increased levels of arsenic and lead in drinking water), signed the Salvage Rider law (which cut down thousands of acres of healthy forests), signed the Panama declaration (which weakened protection for marine mammals including dolphins and whales), supported international distribution of Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, supported mountain top removal strip mining, continued subsidizing the sugar industry in Florida (which poisons the Everglades & diverts water away from wildlife that needs it), and lowered grazing fees on public land. Clinton also supported the World Trade Organization (WTO), which weakened or removed environmental protections, including the weakening of the clean air act and the removal of part of the Endangered Species act's protection of sea turtles. In 1996 former Sierra Club President David Brower wrote, "President Clinton has done more to harm the environment and to weaken environmental regulations in three years than presidents Bush and Reagan did in 12 years."

<snip>

Some democrats attack Bush over outsourcing, but Clinton supported NAFTA, GATT, the WTO and "free trade" generally, which caused outsourcing to go from a trickle to the current flood. Under Clinton the budget for the federally funded Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) increased by over 30%. OPIC gives loans and guarantees to companies intended to encourage investment in "developing" countries, which tends to encourage outsourcing. For example, Kimberly Clark transferred 600 jobs to other countries as a result of this funding and Levi Strauss transferred 100 jobs overseas for the same reason. In other words, the government gives loans to companies, through OPIC, to ship American jobs overseas and Clinton increased OPIC's budget from under $100 million to $3 billion. Under Clinton 14% of OPIC's loans went to Citibank. Robert Ruben, one of Clinton's Treasury Secretaries, became director of Citibank after leaving office. Under Bush OPIC's budget decreased to $800 million. The problem with outsourcing is not that it "steals American jobs," as nationalists argue, but that it replaces relatively high paying jobs with lower paying jobs, causing the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. Clinton's policies were even more pro-outsourcing than Bush's.

<snip>

Clinton’s foreign policy could best be described as “cruise missile imperialism.” ABBers attack Bush for his alleged unilateral “go it alone” foreign policy and for invading Iraq on false pretenses. Both were largely a continuation of Clinton’s policies.

Clinton increased funding for the military. He also bombed more countries than any other peacetime president, including Yugoslavia, Sudan, Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan. In 1998 he bombed alleged terrorist training camps in Afghanistan (which were built by the CIA for Islamic terrorists in the 1980s) supposedly being used by Osama Bin Laden and a factory in Sudan Clinton alleged was producing chemical weapons for Bin Laden. No proof that this factory was producing chemical weapons was ever provided and it was later proven that the plant was actually a medicine factory. This probably resulted in thousands of deaths (there was no investigation so we can’t know the exact number) because the source of medicine for many Sudanese was cut off.

<snip>

Clinton’s policy towards Iraq set the stage for the invasion of Iraq. In 1998 Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act, which made regime change in Iraq official US policy. Clinton waged a terrorist car bombing campaign against Iraq, whose targets included school buses, and attempted to overthrow the Iraqi government via coup. Madeline Albright, who later became Clinton’s secretary of state, said in a May 1996 interview on “60 Minutes” that she thought the death of 500,000 Iraqi children due to sanctions on Iraq was “worth the price.”

Clinton repeatedly bombed Iraq throughout his term. In 1998 Iraq stopped cooperating with weapons inspectors, claiming they were being used by the US as spies. Clinton had the inspectors withdrawn and launched Operation Desert Fox, a major bombing campaign against Iraq much larger than his previous bombings of Iraq. Afterwards the US continued bombing Iraq on an almost daily basis until the invasion. A later UN investigation found that Iraq’s allegations were true; the US was using the inspectors to spy on Iraq. Bush merely escalated Clinton’s aggression against Iraq from a low intensity war to a full-fledged invasion, an escalation that probably would not have been possible had Clinton not been laying siege to Iraq for his entire term. Clinton’s bombings of Iraq were completely unilateral, without UN approval and carried out solely by the US and UK.

68. Let's go back to square one:
This is the original question:

"Could you ask Hillary if Chelsea is going to enlist if Hillary becomes president and supports the continuation of the war?"

Let me break it down for you:

(1) The poster is working for Hillary's campaign so she would be in a good position to ask a pressing question.

(2) The question is, if Hillary becomes president AND supports the continuation of the war, will Chelsea enlist?

It's a fair question, and one that we should know before she becomes president.

It's also a fair question to ask Edwards. Is Cate going to enlist if Edwards becomes president AND supports the continuation of the war. But this isn't an Edward's thread.

69. Bottom line:
Neither Chelsea or Cate is going to enlist.

If I'm wrong Ill crawl from Dallas to Chapel Hill and sign up
for the Edwards campaign.

74. Of course neither one of them will.
But which president would be the bigger hypocrite about asking someone else's family to make a sacrifice that they're not willing to do?

And I'll never forgive Bill or Hillary for allowing Chelsea to take a job with a Hedge Fund when she has a degree in Philosophy. For Christ's sake. Of all the bonehead things to do if you want to be president. Philosophy for crying out loud! How could she not see the moral dilemma with that decision? Her classmates must be rolling their eyes.

"lucks" into a Hedge Fund job without their parents pulling strings? Do you have any idea how this looks to 98% of the public who don't have those kinds of connections?

incredibly "elitest" for lack of a better word.

I need to go back further to look for the one I read just prior to that one that told me about Chelsea's job.

God I hope you're right.

but all sources say she graduated from Stanford with a degree in History, doing her final thesis on the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

Here's a NYT article about her graduation:

Here's a CNN article discussing her studying International Relations at Oxford:

Is there any way to bring up all of my posts, regardless of forum, for the last two months?

I really want to look this up, but this forum, by forum search is tedious.

106. I'm defeated by the DU Search engine. You win this round.
I don't doubt your facts, but the person that told me about Chelsea, also provided a link so there's a piece of information missing and I'm not happy about the fact that I can't retrieve it. This is why I only post to General Discussion when I start a thread, unless I think I'd get a better answer on a more specific forum. Because it's easier to search the archives. But trying to figure out where someone said something on a subthread in a Forum someone else started is just crazy and is the one DU flaw.

If there's anyone with a Superintendent key to the search engines and can do a global search on DU, please look up my author name and the key word, "Philosophy." It would have been in the week or two prior to the Hedge Fund article. What was that title? 2,000,000,000 for 25.

Touche.

But it wasn't my thread, so I can't remember the forum.

Chelsea Clinton would not have gotten that job without her parent's name. I doubt she would have taken it without some counseling from her parents. That's not the kind of job a Philosophy Major would accept easily.

That's my bias.

I don't support her in the primaries (but will grudingly vote for her in the ge).

BTW, what was it about her that attracted you to it?

Also, as much as I don't like her, I don't want her to lose to a republican. Please give us any feedback you receive from people about her when campaigning or canvassing for her. I get the sense there are many that dislike her out there, but perhaps (and hopefully) you can prove otherwise...

Good luck in your efforts.

or if you are not a mod, follow your passion. I did check with senior mods and with Skinner before I posted anything. The point of this OP is that I am excited. Work for whomever excites you. I am going with Hillary and will work for the Dem candidate even if it is another. BTW, as one of the Lounge mods, my main bias is against rude, personal attacks. We all have points of view. Maybe at some point I will expound more on the reasoning behind my support for Hillary. For now, I am sharing my commitment, and also my excitement, not felt in many previous elections. I like the feeling.

Hillary keeps stating the same thing... we need to stay united... there are more differences between the dems and the reps then there are between any of the candidates in the dem party.... any of them would beat any of the reps... the only reps I could stand to listen to is Ron Paul and he is not a rep....

state what you like about your person... volunteer and help win this thing... personal attachs against your own party never won an election...
