"When you have money you never think about it"
"when you don't have money that's all you think about." Tammy Faye Baker chatting with Teri Gross on Fresh Air in 2004 (rebroadcast yesterday) justifying her opulent lifestyle which the board of directors "just gave them." Gold spigots, hey we just never thought about it. Hey lets pass that collection plate one more time. Praise Jesus and help Jim and me live like Jesus did. He did live like this didn't he?

2. Bush and Cheney sure do.
They've both been given more money than they can ever spend, and still waste all day long figuring out how to acquire more, in ways other than going out and earning it.

15. This is getting bizarre because I like a good beating
And in an even more bizarre twist of this bizarre thread, I really liked Tammy Faye Baker in a perverse manner. I despised how she made a living but she was a cute lil pixie with all the makeup and shoulder pads and squeaky voice. Almost cartoonish. Please compund the bizarreness.

5. You know, Chief...
I have always had a problem with those who raise their hands to "praise the lord" and reveal a Rolex Gold President. Especially when they go on to various missives about how their ministry is teetering on the brink of financial ruin.

6. In 1982
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 03:27 PM by BOSSHOG
I visited (for the last time) my very sweet, very christian, very loving, caring kind grandmother who was living on a very small pension and she was writing checks every month to Oral Roberts whom she listened to on the Radio. There was no way possible to convince my Grandma not to do that, I didn't even try. But my rage was blinding.

10. My mother too.
Oh, I got very dramatic once, over the staggering amounts of money(for her) she was sending to the PTL. Of course, I got nowhere with it, but my spleen was well and truly vented.

9. Listen, she's dead after a terrible illness, her husband has served his prison time.
What more can Tammy Faye do for you at this point? There's nothing more to be had from the woman.

11. She serves as a very good example. Her legacy lives on
Jerry Falwell is dead as well but I think it wise to keep his memory and actions alive. As Jerry would say separation of church and state is not in the first amendment, ole jer forgetting that tax exemption for constitution hating religious zealots isn't in the first amendment either. Dead zealots are as useful as those still with us.

17. No
Do I think that Tammy made a living off the hard work of people who could have used their money better then Tammy could? Yes. People who prey on poor people in the name of Jesus Christ and make a living off of them don't have to be hateful for me to find them despicable.

20. And she lost everything for it and is now dead.
When is enough enough? PTL hasn't existed for years. Why not focus your efforts on the current crop who fill the vacuum instead of choosing a dead woman -- who also no longer exists (physically, in any case.)

22. Because I'm a multi-tasker??
Do you approve of my carping at religious zealots? Are you a Tammy fan? Yes Tammy done good despite her incredible shortcomings (and I'm not referring to her height.)

"Focus my efforts on the current crop?" Are you good with that? I intensely despise the hate of focus on the family but it will not die when james dobson stands before justice.

I just can't figure out your post. Please share with me your approval/disapproval of my choosing the constitution over the bible.

25. Settin' the bar a little low there, aren't ya?
One can be a legendary scumbag blight on humanity and still fall far short of Falwell's level of hatred.

She wasn't so much a hater as she was a user: po' white trash on a feeding-frenzy bender. It'd be interesting to know whether she paid much attention to the effects of her preying on the weak or to what degree she really believed, but the result of her actions pretty much speak for themselves.

The Little Bo Peep innocence and contrition wear thin, so she deserves some ongoing vilification.

They wouldn't want to be embarassed about all that dough, would they? Another saying that gets alot of attention in those circles is "The poor will always be with us".

18. People who gave them money were probably lonely.
Thats who these televangelists appeal to. And then they recount the story of Mark 12: 42-44 about the widow giving her last cent, and voila, there goes your inheritance. I find it hard to fault Tammy Faye completely because she was apparently not involved in the financial aspects of the organization, and also like a lot of women who conform to traditional gender role expectations, she probably did not question where the money was coming from, she just wanted to make a nice home for her family. I can't fault her for that, even though some of her spending was out of control.

21. Heard that interview.
Terry asked if she and Jim ever considered all that money might be put to better uses, and she said they were "so busy working" they never thought about the money. We just never thought about it, she said -- when you don't have any money, that's all you think about, but when you have money, you never think about it -- that was the quote I believe.

The board just handed them their salaries. They never asked any questions. She was quite belligerent about this. lady.protest.2.much.

23. That's what gets me.
My brother and SIL are not rich by any means, but are comfortable. She wanted me to go to see Oklahoma!, but I wouldn't because the tickets were $100 each. She ranted to me about how $100 isn't very much money and I was being ridiculous.

$100 is a lot of money to me.

At least my SIL doesn't try to get millions of people to attend $100 musicals.

I imagine that if we all traded in our DVD Players, Console Gaming Systems, CD's, televisions, etc., for cash and used that to help hunger in impoverished third world nations, we'd do a lot of good.

But we don't really think about those things because we have them...
