When asked if America is on the right track, the majority of respondents in recent polls say America is on the "wrong" track. What could we do to put America on the right track?
First of all, we need something that the American people can unite behind. We are a very divided nation. If we cannot unite behind a war, what could we possibly unite behind? Is it possible to unite behind a message?
Secondly, America needs to believe there is justice and that all Americans must adhere to the same laws and the same Constitution. We cannot sustain a democracy where some laws apply to one group of people but not another. I'm afraid that is the present perception. We must have a fair system of justice.
Thirdly, we need to replace We, the Corporations, with the original We, the People. What is good for the "corporations" is not necessarily good for the people. We should start by restoring the tax rates on the corporations.
Fourth, we should dismantle the Military Industrial Complex to a large degree. We are wasting absolutely too much money on defense and getting little in return. The same applies to the numerous Intelligence agencies which have little value on a world-wide scale. It has been decades since they have predicted any large event or catastrophe properly.
Fifth, we should make it a policy that anybody that works in our country of such great wealth, should never be below the poverty line. The "welfare" of our people should be put in the proper perspective.
Sixth, we should restore the credibility of our nation around the world. There was a time when we were the beacon of liberty and freedom. With recent events and reports, that is no longer the case. We need a diplomatic "surge" around the world to sell what is good about America.
Seventh, we need to reform our electoral system. The Democratic and Republican Parties have become entrenched in their positions. Most are no longer serving the public interest - they are there to serve the "special" interests and to enrich themselves in whatever manner possible without going to jail. We need to reform the process so that "independent" candidates are not prohibited from being on the ballots. Also, we need to put into law that no Congress can vote themselves a raise without the approval of the people. This is a dangerous development.
Lastly, we need to do something for the people. The people are what make this county what it is. When was the last time something was done for average working people? It is true that the recent Congress passed a new "minimum wage" law but it was not enough to make up for what the average person has lost to "inflation" in the last 10 years.
The people deserve more. For starters, we could make it a law that every person in America deserves the right to go to a doctor if they are sick, without the approval of middle-men insurance companies or anyone else. The people have fought and died for this country and they are being ignored. This would be a good first step to restoring America and putting her back on the right track, in my opinion.
