My letter to my Senator re: Impeachment
Wrote a letter last week on the 4th of July to both my senators regarding removing the criminals now known as President Bush and VP Cheney from office - starting with their impeachment for crimes against the country.

This is what I received today:

Thank you for advising me of your desire to see President Bush impeached. I appreciate hearing from you and understand your concerns and mounting frustration.

I fully appreciate and share your strong dissatisfaction with the current Administration. Major challenges like the war in Iraq and the Gulf Coast tragedy only exacerbate the sense of mishandling and ineffectiveness of those of us who are concerned about the priorities and judgment of this Administration.

While I know many Americans share your strong feelings, I do not think that options like calling for impeachment of the President or the Vice President serve our ultimate objective, which is getting the country back on the right track. The Democratic Party, by vote of the people, took back the majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the November elections. But that result has provided Democrats in Congress with more than just subpoena powers or the Speaker's gavel. For the first time in over a decade, we have the opportunity to set the agenda and lead the policy debate, and we have a responsibility to do something constructive with that opportunity.

In this last election, we saw people from Montana to Rhode Island respond to a message of common purpose and progress. On the campaign trail last fall, I saw people respond to a shared desire to educate our kids, grow our economy, care for the vulnerable and expand a culture of tolerance and diversity. I heard a call for progress, not partisanship or political gamesmanship. Americans are ready for a more civil and responsible style of leadership than the kind we have seen on Capitol Hill in recent years. Americans expect and deserve leaders who will focus on meeting the needs of their constituents and working together to solve the most pressing problems we face as a nation.

Thank you again for writing. Please stay in touch in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator

And here's my response:

Dear Senator,

Thank you for your recent reply to my letter calling for impeachment (and hopefully imprisonment) of Bush and Cheney. In your letter you state:

"While I know many Americans share your strong feelings, I do not think that options like calling for impeachment of the President or the Vice President serve our ultimate objective, which is getting the country back on the right track. "

I respectfully feel VERY STRONGLY that you are VERY wrong in the message that the American People sent the govt last fall. It was the hope of many that the Democratic Leadership would assume the role that was intended to them under the Constitution and return this country to the Rule of Law. It is slowly happening with the Oversight Committees and the Judiciary Committees work in reviewing what current crime the admin has arrogantly committed to date.

However, if we are to return our country to the Rule of Law, if the Constitution is to continue to have any meaning in our government, History itself has proven that skirting unpleasant issues such as impeachment, removal from office and imprisonment of office holders who refuse to uphold Constitutional Law, that the action to choose the less difficult path has always led us back to where others of the same ilk, or in the case of Cheney and Rumsfeld, come back into power again.

I WANT THIS CHAIN OF CORRUPTION TO BE SEVERED ***NOW*** AND NOT BY SOME FICTIONAL OTHER CONGRESS THAT HAS THE FORTITUDE TO UPHOLD THEIR VOWS TO PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION.

I am sorry if this is not a convenient time to impeach. But I think this country is worth it and I know that you do too. I don't think you understand that there will be a terrific backlash, either now or later, if these criminals are allowed to continue. And your name as well as others on the Democratic side of the aisle will be noted as enablers. I say this as a citizen who is very supportive of 98% of all that you do and say. I say this as someone who doesn't want to choose someone else to be her senator.

I applaud your desire to get our country back on track. I don't know how it can be healthy again while we ignore this growing cancer. I hope our country survives long enough for you and others to see this cancer and do something constructive about it.

I don't care to hear again that you think there aren't enough votes to get this to happen. I don't think you know if the votes are there or not. You won't know until impeachment hearings are made public and the American People hear, some of them for the first time, what these criminals have done to our beloved country.

I look forward to your reply.

I support this man and admire his intelligence. We must find a way to change our reps thinking on Impeachment. We need to continue to voice our concerns on what happens if NOTHING IS DONE to reprimand these criminals for what they have done to our country.

Peace.

1. Obama just doesn't get it.
Let's overlook the murder happening in the alley, we've got to build a park down the street!

2. I think he's only one of many...
We need to continue the conversation - and the more of us who do write and call the better as well as the more likely that they will start the hearings.

3. Yes, he is one of many. And we need to let them know we do not
approve, will not support, and will not vote for, those who think impeachment is not important.

In my opinion, investigations, oversight, and impeachment should be the top priority in Congress right now. They are the key to getting our troops home, and preventing others from pulling the same stunts (or worse) in the future.

I think the communication with Barack should continue, if he keeps getting bombarded, he's going to have to start rethinking his opinions if he wants to continue being a player going forward.

Thanks to all who take the time to write and call. It does make a difference.
