A lot of people call him racist because of his stance on immigration, but I thought it was interesting that he in fact is married to a Mexican-American. Not that it makes his opinion any more valid, since I've actually seen Mexican-American Minutemen, but fascinating none the less.

1. I'd be more interested in her and/or her family's immigration history.
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 04:46 PM by sparosnare
If she/they came here through all the proper legal channels and became citizens, it might explain his angst at those who come here illegally. If there's lawbreaking in her history, then his stance would difficult to explain.

She brought her handgun to Dulles after Nahn Wun Wun; created quite a stir, too....

5. Rupert Murdoch is married to an Asian yet he still promotes racism
Dobbs and Murdoch both will say whatever they need to in order to make money, whether they believe it or not. They are both demagogues.

7. Too bad Dobbs is so obsessed with immigration, because he does bring up a lot of valid points.
Especially when he talks about the middle class.

9. Why do people assume
that a Mexican can't be prejudiced against other Mexicans? If nationality precludes racism then there are no Americans that are racist against blacks, right?

Light skinned Mexicans largely descended from the Spanish hold dark skinned native Mexicans in very low regard and those light skinned Mexicans control the bulk of the wealth of Mexico while their darker skinned countrymen mostly live in poverty.

10. I don't think Dobbs is racist.
Whoever says that is playing a cheap card. 99% of what he says about it is valid. Its insane to have Feds going through our phone calls with a fine tooth comb looking for Al Qaeda while the southern border is wide open. The only people who benefit from the wide open border secenario is mega corporations who use it to defeat American labor, (aka the backbone of the Democratic party). Most of what Dobbs calls for is for us to have control of our border. Once we have that, there is nothing saying we can't let them all in legally, but but with labor rights, taxes, and the right to join unions like any American

11. Calling for control of the border is one thing. Obsessively ranting night after night after night
about "illegals" and consistently appealing to racists and hate-mongers through demagoguery masquerading as protection of the middle class is another.

15. i saw her on 60 minutes when they interviewed Dobbs
her parents also live with them on Dobbs ranch in Jersey.

Immigration - regardless of skin color is a real economic issue for low-wage/union workers. Its got more to do with losing jobs than about racism.

But isn't that what capitalism really is - the freedom to work and the freedom to find a job? If we prevent people from working, why not we just let the govt control everything. The govt can control the border, they can also provide a living wage for everyone - fair is fair.

Isn't being American really a state of mind? yet we tell foreigners that they can never be real Americans.

I'm sorry, he's a privileged ultra-white child of the ruling class. The rancor he spews smacks of racism, although maybe I'm just off-base here.

As for his stance on illegal immigration, he's got a point: the law needs to mean something, and to reward scofflaws is a bad precedent. Still, his obsession with it is a bit fishy.

His other political stances are pretty consistently conservative and he's got that smug, upright twinkly-eyed front of one to the manor born. If he didn't fixate on this, he might not get too much heat for being a bigot.

although the misplaced passion it generates in you certainly inspires some nice invective! - ("... that smug, upright twinkly-eyed front of one to the manor born.")

My classdar told me you were totally wrong, so I looked it up - here's Wikipedia on the early life of Lou Dobbs:

Dobbs was born in Childress, Texas, the son of a co-owner of a propane business and a bookkeeper. When Lou was 12, his father's propane business failed and the family moved to Rupert, Idaho. He attended Minico High School in Rupert, serving as student body president in 1963. He earned a degree in economics from Harvard University, graduating in 1967.

Not a hint of the Social Register about him - born in Texas to a father who at best was half-a-Buck Strickland (for "King of the Hill" fans out there) whose business failed, moved to Idaho, went to a public High School there (looked it up, yeah, Minico is a public school.) He was just one of those middle class kids out in vast America who must have had some good grades and SAT scores who made it to Harvard for his undergrad degree.
