Sicko, Meet Slicko
By Nancy Greggs

As many of you know, I’ve been rantless for a while now, laid low by illness right here in the heartless bosom of an uncaring nation that has universal healthcare.

I was waiting for something that would set my feet back on the path of righteous anger, and sure enough it came in the form of this little gem of a press release from something called FreedomWorks ...

... as honest and forthright as your average salesman from Slicko Healthcare Insurance, the for-profit corporation that is happy to enroll you in their program for a ridiculous monthly premium (provided you are not sick, swear to never become sick, and can vouch for the fact that your bank account is even healthier than you purport to be).

As someone living in Canada, one of those wacky countries that provide government-funded healthcare along with every other industrialized nation on the face of the earth except one (hint: first two initials being “U” and “S”), I believe I am qualified to speak to the issues raised by FreedomWorks and the other oh-so-ill-informed (or should that be ill and uninformed) rightwing minions who are intent on obfuscating the truth about government-funded healthcare faster than you can yell "Free Scooter Libby!".

Let’s start with Lie No. 1, shall we? “Moore’s approach would make the government responsible for providing health care to all Americans.”

As is the case with all nations who provide universal healthcare, the Canadian government is not responsible for providing medical care to a single citizen. Professional Canadian medical practitioners are responsible for providing healthcare; the role of government is to reimburse them for their services.

And as is usual with these ignore-that-man-behind-the-curtain types, Lie No. 1 is always followed by Scare Tactic No. 1 – and nothing scares the embarrassingly flimsy hospital gown off a right-winger’s ass faster than the idea that their hard-earned dollars are going to be used to care for anyone other than themselves: “Healthy individuals that require minimal care would wind up subsidizing people like Moore, who are overweight and/or live decidedly unhealthy lifestyles by frequenting fast-food restaurants, smoke, or use drugs.”

Yes, that’s right, folks. Under a government-subsidized healthcare system, your tax dollars will never under any circumstances be used to care for the hard-working, selfless minister of your local church whose Leukemia requires him to have a life-saving bone-marrow transplant. They will instead always be funneled to some fast-food guzzling hippo who spends ninety percent of his waking hours in the smoking section of the local bar, snorting coke off a plate of whipped cream-laden Twinkies, a pile o’ Cheez-Whiz, and a dozen Big Macs soaked in Tequila.

And what would the impact of Scare Tactic No. 1 be without the follow-up of Scare Tactic No. 2, the specter of government being involved in every aspect of healthcare? “In the 2008 election cycle, Americans will have a choice between market based reforms that empower individuals and families, or socializing health care and turning it over to bureaucrats.”

This kind of Slicko lingo is meant to conjure up the nightmare scenario of every visit to the doctor becoming akin to a day at the DMV, a nightmarish maze of endless lines, red tape, and paperwork that must be filed in triplicate and bear the notarized signatures of at least two Cabinet members and one member of Congress: “Hello, Senator Hatch? Dr. Bergman over at Mount Sinai here. One of your constituents just turned up in the ER, and I’m wondering if you can sign-off on the emergency appendectomy before he succumbs to – yes, sir, of course I’ll hold.”

It’s actually a very simple concept, folks: for-profit healthcare means just that, it is being run for a profit, and that profit comes right out of your wallet.

In the Canadian system, a portion of every citizen’s tax dollars are set aside to pay for the services of healthcare professionals; nothing more, nothing less. On the other hand, paying premiums to a for-profit insurance company means that every dollar they can save by not spending it on your healthcare needs is a dollar that goes into the pockets of the corporation’s shareholders.

In short, my Canadian doctor has no motive to tell me to take two aspirin and call him in the morning when what I really need is a pacemaker. He isn’t going to be financially rewarded for saving the system thousands of dollars – but your friendly Slicko Healthcare Insurance company sees every dollar not spent on your wellbeing as a more-than-healthy contribution to the company coffers, that magical place from which performance bonuses, seven-figure salaries and multi-million-dollar golden parachute CEO severance packages emanate like so much manna from heaven.

Of course, the most effective scare tactic in the anti-universal healthcare arsenal is the concept of deliberate abuse, the idea that the laziest citizens will clog up the system with bogus claims because "those people" just can’t pass up an opportunity to get somethin’ for nuthin’ – you know, kind of like those able-bodied Welfare Queens who refuse to get jobs so they can lounge around in the lap of luxury that only welfare checks and food stamps can offer.

Are there abuses here in universal healthcare hell? You betcha! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to sit in a crowded doctor’s waiting room, surrounded by people who are there for their fifteenth flu shot in a month just so they can stock up on those free cotton balls they tuck under your band-aid after an injection. And if you need surgery, well, be prepared to stand in line behind hundreds of WQs who are undergoing unnecessary amputations just because they can’t pass up a free operation.

All things being equal – or unequal, as the case may be – as someone who has been blessed with good health for 99.9% of the time I have been paying into the Canadian healthcare system, I have indeed contributed more money than has been expended on my personal care.

By the same token, I have never reaped the benefits of the tax dollars I have contributed to the local fire department, because I’ve never had a house fire. In both cases, my feeling in the same: I may not need the services I am paying for, but I sleep better at night knowing those services are available if and when I do need them. And if my money is spent on putting out a fire in my neighbour’s house, or covers the cost of my neighbour’s child’s kidney transplant, I think I can live with that inequity.

And by the way, if you really believe that buying health insurance from Slicko & Co. is a good investment, just remember that the next time you’re in a local bar and you see that fast-food guzzling hippo snorting coke off a plate of whipped cream-laden Twinkies, a pile o’ Cheez-Whiz, and a dozen Big Macs soaked in Tequila, he’s probably a major shareholder in Slicko, and he’s paying his tab with that big dividend he got thanks to not having wasted money on your six-year-old’s chemotherapy – oh, ahem, sorry about the kid.

It should be noted that FreedomWorks was formerly known as “Citizens for a Sound Economy”. In other words, having now ‘fixed’ the economy, they have moved on to ‘fixing’ the American healthcare system. That kind of success pretty much speaks for itself.

I just wanted to send out a special thank you to my BabylonSister, and all of my DU Family members for their good wishes during my recent illness. Your kind words contributed to my recovery more than you can ever know.

And a fond PM to Sweet Eileen, my MIL and best girlfriend, and to my dear DU companion, Monkeyman, both of whom recently passed away. I miss both of you more than I can say, but there is great comfort in knowing that you are sharing martinis in the Ultimate VIP Lounge, swappin’ Bush jokes and laughing your asses off – together.

8. I've seen it, above all I think it drives home the need to take money out of politics
We need to have no private money in campaigns, make them all publicly financed. There is a scene in the movie where he puts the price tags of pharmaceutical/HMO donations to candidates. It's is just unreal. It is a classic Michael Moore movie which provides an excellent picture of the American medical industry.

It's most excellent to see you.

The health care system is broken badly and needs help. I go to an OB/GYN who doesn't carry malpractice insurance. Everytime I go, I hope that he know what he's doing. Most of the OB/GYNs down here in Miami don't carry it, and there are only a few hospitals here which will deliver a baby.

That's sad.

15. Despite what Slicko says here's the truth about Canadian (Universal) healthcare:
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 12:54 AM by glarius
I have posted this in the past, but I think it needs posting again:
Here's what I can tell you:
This is a big country, and you can find people to say just about anything with regards to just about everything...So you will find people who (for whatever reason) will say that our health care system is causing people to die in the streets for lack of care...This is ludicrous...I have heard or read things said by people advocating for privatization of our health care system, that
are completely false..I can tell you that in my family, my husband had care from one of the top heart specialists in the world (he's in Toronto), and successful and timely cataract surgery....We do have to wait for elective surgery, but I've never heard of anyone dying for needed surgery...You already know about our drugs and the vast difference in prices here and in your country...I have heard American politicians on TV say things in order to scare the American public....They say we don't have a choice in the doctor we want...FALSE...We choose our own....I myself have changed doctors in the past several years...And all Canadians have access to all specialists, treatments, and surgery.....They say the Government runs health care and makes all the decisions...Again FALSE....The doctors and hospitals run things and send the bills to the government for payment...Period...The most recent poll I know of on the subject shows that (I forget the exact amount) somewhere between 90% to 95% of Canadians want to keep our present system.....We aren't perfect and can certainly be improved, and the government has recently done a study and as a result is putting more money into the system, but I honestly wish the good people of your country would have the benefit of a similar system....By the way, during the last few days I saw in the news the case of the American man who accidentally shot himself in the head with a nail gun...They said he has no insurance and is stuck with a bill of $100,000....That is insane.....Anyway, I've gone on long enough about
this....Don't let anyone convince you Canadians want to go to privatization....It's just not true.....Good luck...

P.S...In a big country like this, there are bound to occasionally be people who slip through the cracks for some reason or other...So I'm sure there will be some who will have a story to tell of a failure...
I will also say that despite paying for health care through our taxes, we manage to have one of the best standards of living in the world.....

22. The US spend more per capita, than any other country,
to NOT provide universal health care, and to limit provision to only those they deem absolutely need it.

So if government funded health care is available to roughly 20% of the US population (plucked from my bum, but somewhere in the ballpark) that means the US is spending more than five times per patient than any other country, to provide the less than mediocre service that is so grudgingly given.

Or another way of looking at it, (which might actually mean something to the "I'm not paying for him" crowd) those who do pay for their own health care, 80 odd percent of the cost is pure gravy. NOT honest profit. That's already in the 20% that actually pays for your health care. Pure, line someone's pocket, gravy.

insurers "saved" at the patient's expense here in the US? I'm sure each and every DUer could tell a horror story about care deferred, care denied, or just plain care ignored because of insurance industry greed.

The day a bone in my ankle snapped in two, leaving my foot unattached, and me in severe pain, the orthopedic surgeon sent me home for the night because the insurance company suits decided I didn't need to be hospitalized before undergoing surgery. I was in agony. I thought I was going to pass out each and every time the foot moved even a tiny bit. I'd never wish that experience on anybody, and yet the insurer thought nothing of putting me through it to save that one night stay. Bastards.

Welcome back, and I'm glad you're on the mend. Always enjoy your rants.

FreedomWorks is a real piece of work and it AIN'T about freedom. This little group is headed by none other than Dick Armey, who after years of doing the bidding of his corporate sponsors in the House of Representatives, now does their bidding as a paid lobbyist. His little group called FreedomWorks is nothing more than a front for his corporate lobbying.

Another interesting tidbit about FreedomWorks: the guy who owns the Cancer Centers of America is on their board. I'm sure HE has no interest in maintaining the current for-profit health "care" system.:eyes:

I can't call this one a rant. It is just too damned straightforward and factual. Hardly a flaming sentence.

This pp, though is priceless:

Are there abuses here in universal healthcare hell? You betcha! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to sit in a crowded doctor’s waiting room, surrounded by people who are there for their fifteenth flu shot in a month just so they can stock up on those free cotton balls they tuck under your band-aid after an injection. And if you need surgery, well, be prepared to stand in line behind hundreds of WQs who are undergoing unnecessary amputations just because they can’t pass up a free operation.

And you hit the nail on the head. Fear. Obfuscation. Propaganda.

And the sheeple just suck it up and say yeah! right on! don't spend my taxes on (fill in the epithet)

May all their houses catch fi... no, I musn't say that.

42. I lived in Britain for 35 years
Yet it's amazing how many people I've met since I moved to the States who think they know more about Britain's healthcare system than I do, based on the horror stories they've been fed by the American media. "You have to wait 10 weeks to see a doctor! And they'll refuse to send you to a specialist!". And when I tell them that they don't know what they're talking about, at least one of them has brought up a previously unmentioned grandmother who has some unspecified horror story about Britian's NHS that apparently trumps my experiences, so there. Take that, reality-based community!

Anyway, I'll add my "welcome back" to all the others. And I still want to be you when I grow up!

...how healthcare has not been THE issue in every election of recent years. I'm a Brit, we've had socialised healthcare here for years and if Blair (as an example) tried to take it away, you'd see full-blown rioting in the streets. But in the US, they pay more for less service. Go figure.

OK, new rule: Anyone arguing that the rights enumerated in the US Constitution (as ammended) apply to corporations (when the text specifically says "persons") must be locked away for crimes against basic sense (a violation of the Being Bloody Stupid Act 2009).

92. My point and that of the article I posted a link to
is that corporate personhood is bullshit that is NOT a right enumerated or even interpreted as being in the Constitution.

I'm rabidly, completely, absolutely AGAINST corporate "personhood" in any form, manner or usage!!!

Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 01:23 PM by ProudDad
"By the same token, I have never reaped the benefits of the tax dollars I have contributed to the local fire department, because I’ve never had a house fire. In both cases, my feeling in the same: I may not need the services I am paying for, but I sleep better at night knowing those services are available if and when I do need them. And if my money is spent on putting out a fire in my neighbour’s house, or covers the cost of my neighbour’s child’s kidney transplant, I think I can live with that inequity."

When contemplating the U.S. system of health care delivery determined by ones relative affluence vs the Canadian System, I'd rather live in a world filled with the communitarian values you voice so well.

On Edit: Force your congresscritter to help pass HR676 -- Medicare for ALL!

68. Whoohoo! Welcome back!
This line always puzzles me when I hear it:
“In the 2008 election cycle, Americans will have a choice between market based reforms that empower individuals and families, or socializing health care and turning it over to bureaucrats.”

So, the current system which has insurance company office towers overflowing with paper shufflers whose job it is to deny claims is somehow not the same as turning health care over to bureaucrats? Technically, they're private company employees rather than government workers, but when you measure it in hours you spend on hold getting your billing questions not really answered, and how many phone calls and registered letters it takes to get even relatively simple bills paid ... how is this different from the nightmare DMV scenario?

76. Cuba's looking good about now.
Beautiful, humorous post. Thank you. As a full-time contract worker who's been without health insurance for nearly six years, I have a keen interest in health care reform in this country. Even when I had full coverage I saw my co-pays balloon every few months and the quality of the health care decline (my personal physician went from 15+ minute visits to brief, unconcerned "How ya doin'?" check-ups within the space of three years). Clearly something major needs to be done; e.g., were I to pay out-of-pocket for my own coverage I'd be looking at $200+ a month for a decent plan (with still-sizable deductables) - and I'm 32 years old and in good health. Like many I constantly worry about the financial cost of accidents and serious illnesses more than the actual physical cost.

America's great at meeting the needs of patients with very good plans that cover the costs of very expensive procedures; there needs to be a concerted focus on preventative health care and reducing infant mortality, among other things. I can't wait to see the film, though I know I'll be further enraged.

78. call yourself a Canadian!?! You forgot the maple syrup on those tequila-soaked Big Macs!
"All things being equal – or unequal, as the case may be – as someone who has been blessed with good health for 99.9% of the time I have been paying into the Canadian healthcare system, I have indeed contributed more money than has been expended on my personal care."

Well said! I, too, have been lucky enough not only to have been born in Canada after Medicare went nationwide ... but to have had relatively good health. Do I resent a penny of the tax (and premiums) that I have paid into OHIP (and now MSP, since moving to BC)? NO! I look around at the people I love -- and I think about my uncle's dialysis, my other uncle's heart transplant, my dad's cataract surgery, my mom's knee repair, my co-worker's ulcer, my other co-worker's uterine cancer .... and how all of those people are alive and walking around (even my mom, after her OHIP-supported physio).

And the more I think about it, if I saw the giant room in this province that stores the revenues that make this possible -- I would run over to it right now, and I would empty the $10.78 currently in my wallet into that pile of cash, because all those people are worth at least that much! But the people who administer that giant room don't want that -- they don't even want the pennies and dimes under my the chesterfield at home, and they certainly don't want to accumulate a big stack of money for a privileged group of CEOs and shareholders. They only want a reasonable slice of the federal and provincial tax revenues, so they can use it to pay the doctors and nurses, lab techs and hospital cleaners, and buy flu vaccines and MRI machines and such.

I moved here from NY as an adult, so I've had experience with healthcare practices on both sides of the border.

Had I been a REAL Canadian, I would have described the coke-snorting hippo as "drowning himself in a sea of heart-clogging poutine, smothered in a pile of sugar-glazed Tim Bits" (LOL!)

95. MMMmmmMMMmmm... Nanaimo bars...
Gad, I haven't had a Nanaimo bar in AGES. However, we're going up to Vancouver next week... gotta make sure I hit the Bread Garden.

Seriously, though, as a Canadian living in the US, I do have a couple of comments to make.

Not long after I moved down here, I had to have a pap test and get some more birth control pills. As usual, I waited until the last second to make an appointment with my HMO (since I just LOOOOVE having a pap test done), only to find out that the first appointment I could make for this was 3 months in the future.

WTF?!?!?!?

And here we were listening to all the propaganda in the Great White North about how wonderful the US system was, and I can't even get a pap test in a reasonable time frame? I used to just go to a clinic in downtown Vancouver. No appointment necessary.

True, there are some waits, for example my cousin had to wait 4 months for bypass surgery. He had to wait that long, because he was in no danger. However, a few years later, when he suffered cardiac arrest (fortunately he was near a fire station), he was in the hospital immediately, with a defibrillator installed in his chest a few days later. Cost? No post-op bills. No post-op bankruptcy.

Good to see you back, Nance. Hope you're feeling much better. Especially since there won't be any additional bills to pay!
