Poll question: Hillary/Bill "Soprano's Spoof."....What did DU'ers Think?
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 04:35 PM by KoKo01
They showed it on CNN and it's linked here at DU:

I wondered what the DU'ers think of this as a Campaign Promotion?

27. As A Country, This Is Where We Are
The Sopranos, A cable TV show about a mafia mob boss that displays the worst that we have in this country, the glorified criminal element. Drugs, violence, prostitution, extortion, money laundering, murder, racism etc. We applaud this type of media outlet and Hillary Clinton, who wants to be President, along with Bill, thought this was a good idea. Just another reason not to elect her for the democratic nomination. If she can't see the association with Tony Soprano as a bad thing, along with the fact that if she becomes President, she will have to handle these very issues. she is dumb and clueless. Just because the show was popular, does not mean you use it to impress votes. She may have thought that this was hip but it displays ineptness. This country has major issues that need fixing and she could have spent that money talking about any one of the many issues that america faces. And I thought that Bill & Hillary were smart!

42. I agree; it was a clumsy decision by the supposedly sure-footed Clintons
An invitation to those who would like to lampoon them for their dark, conniving ways.

Wait! Here's a willing volunteer: Maureen Dowd (go figure):

<The Clintons’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy seems so similar to that of the Sopranos, that it could be a bit risky to play the mob couple, even for a gag.

Like Carmela, who was rewarded with jewels, watches and building permits for her husband’s infidelities with his goomahs, Hillary, too, found a way to profit from her husband’s failings and flaws.

At a lunch Carmela had with her girlfriends at Vesuvio, the women spoke admiringly of Hillary as a role model, someone who was able to turn a sow’s ear of a marriage into a silk purse.

And like Tony, Hillary is so power-hungry that she can justify any thuggish means to get the prize.

In the Clintons’ mob spoof, as a rather wooden Hillary is about to announce her song choice to a loose and funny Bill, the screen suddenly goes dark.

In the case of “The Sopranos,” this was cause for perplexity. In the case of the Clintons, it’s an unwittingly satirical moment, because if there’s one thing we know about this tough New York family, it is that they will never, ever go dark.

Where’s a black screen when you need one?>

My thoughts exactly. It was stupid, with stilted, contrived and just plain bad acting.

Again, they have fallen for the image (what a dumb one) over substance.

Yet another reason, I will never vote for Hillary.

30. It Not About Support
It's about making a careful assessment and think about what you are doing. Again, if you can't see the atmosphere that the show displays and the major issues in this country. How is she going to lead? This is not just about Iraq. You and others support a TV show that shows a glorified lifestyle of crime and violence and it's ok. If you or someone you know got robbed, beaten, murdered or was a drug dealer, you would think otherwise. If your President looks the other way and not deal with all that the Sopranos represents, (ie,George Bush) you would be calling for impeachment. We talk about the issues 24/7 and you want a leader who can't see that those exact issues that the show portrays is ok? We need serious leadership, not someone who can't tell the difference. As you say "lighten up" I say get serious. You don't want that in the White House.

52. Hey, that "You and others support a TV show
that shows a glorified lifestyle of crime and violence" doesn't apply to us all. I didn't watch The Sopranos! Blame the show's viewers if you want, not me OR the Clintons in this case. (I have no way to know whether they were regular fans of the show, and probably you don't either.) Every campaign needs some awareness of popular culture icons.

I saw reruns of that final scene of the show, of course--who could miss it if they watch TV at all? Personally, I found the Bill-and-Hill takeoff of it cute and funny. Not that I don't want candidates to talk about serious issues too. But nobody can do that all the time. I'd sure rather see this type of commercial than attack ads making a point by insinuation.

Seriously, it's a very smart piece and it hits many dimensions. I especially found the "angry white guy at the bar" a clever way to deflate a lot of the misogynous attitudes toward her...by having fun with it.

I like your poll, KoKo01 and am giving it a K&R. Your "choices" were good ones, too!

7. I have never heard the song, but I looked up the lyrics and I
think they could fit for a campaign song

High above the mountains, far across the sea
I can hear your voice calling out to me
Brighter than the sun and darker than the night
I can see your love shining like a light
And on and on this earth spins like a carousel
If I could travel across the world
The secrets I would tell

Chorus:
You and I
Were meant to fly
Higher than the clouds
We'll sail across the sky
So come with me
And you will feel
That we're soaring
That we're floating up so high
‘Cause you and I were meant to fly

Sailing like a bird high on the wings of love
Take me higher than all the stars above
I'm burning, yearning
Gently turning round and round
I'm always rising up I never
Want to come back down

Chorus x2

You and I were meant to fly

13. One of the main goals of her campaign is to reposition her
as a likable, funny human being. Every time Terry McCauliffe or others of her team talk about her they praise her wonderful sense of humor. All of this is meant to counter the prevailing image of Hillary as an ambition-driven shrew. Personally, I find it all a bit juvenile, but I think it is a clear indication that she and her advisers are smart enough to realize her one of her biggest drawbacks is the dragon lady persona that the RW and the MSM have painted her with.

I thought it was quite brilliant. And as a very, very disappointed Sopranos fan, it somehow made the ending of the show more appealing to me. (Okay, I still hate how The Sopranos ended, but at least we're getting some hilarious spoofs out of it...did anyone else catch the Pirates mascot parody on Keith's show? That had me laughing out loud, too!)

So yeah, it was great, even if the final song choice is kind of baffling.

When Hillary's serious, she's "humorless." When she shows that she knows how to laugh at herself, she's "dumbing down" or "trying too hard."

48. This isn't the first time they have done this.
I'm still on station over here, so I haven't seen the latest,
and it probably would go right by me, because I have never
seen an episode of "The Sopranos" either.

Even so, they first did a spoof on the insurance companies
in 1993 when the industry were doing its first hate campaign against
Hillary with their "Harry and Louise" commercials. Then in 1995,
Hillary did a self-mocking video with "Hillary Gump," which had me
in tears, I was laughing so hard. So was everyone else, from Al Gore
to Newt Gingrich, so don't single me out, here.

Al Gore is still my first choice, and Hillary is still to the right
of my tastes, but this doesn't change the fact that I find her a very
pleasant person, and a funny one. So Bill and Hill had some more fun
making another video. I would read about as much into this as Dennis
Kucinich showing off a watercolor he had painted (and I have no clue
if he even paints or not).

If this is causing anyone to jump to any conclusions (or convulsions),
whether in her favor or against her, I'd just cite Sgt. Hulka: "Lighten up, Francis."

51. I checked out those lyrics
I can't believe she or her staff chose that song.
That's the worst error in judgment I think I've
seen them make yet!! This is my personal taste, of
course, but Bill's campaign song, Fleetwood Mac's
Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow is a far better
song for an optimistic future.

If Hillary was looking for a "fly" song, I would have
chosen the old Steve Miller song, "Fly Like an Eagle:"

Fly Like an Eagle

By: Steve Miller
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle
Till I'm free
Oh, Lord, through the revolution

Feed the babies
Who don't have enough to eat
Shoe the children
With no shoes on their feet
House the people
Livin' in the street
Oh, oh, there's a solution

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle
Till I'm free
Fly through the revolution

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle
Till I'm free
Fly through the revolution

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future
Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'
Into the future

Hillary might not have liked the reference to the "revolution,"
but as an inspiring song, I like it better: I even told them
so, but for some strange reason, they didn't take my advice! LOL

(Fine, let Al Gore use it instead!)
