Citing ongoing cooperation, district court postpones sentencing for former lobbyist Abramoff and ...

Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his associate Michael Scanlon have bought themselves more time as they cooperate with prosecutors amid renewed Justice Department activity in the case.

On Monday, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia postponed the sentencing dates for Abramoff and Scanlon yet again. Abramoff and Scanlon were convicted of conspiring to bribe public officials more than a year ago, but the court has postponed the sentencing of each several times.

The postponements may be bad news for former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) and Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.), who had close ties to Abramoff and whose Northern Virginia homes the FBI recently searched. Since the searches, both Doolittle and DeLay have vehemently defended themselves and lashed out at the FBI, demanding that agents “fish or cut bait” in their investigations.

Rudy and Scanlon both worked for DeLay before Abramoff hired them as lobbyists. Scanlon went on to open a public-relations firm that kicked back millions of dollars of Indian tribal money to Abramoff. Court records filed in Rudy’s guilty plea stated that while working for DeLay, Rudy arranged for the congressman to sign a letter opposing a postal-rate increase to help an Abramoff client and helped stop an anti-gambling bill opposed by another Abramoff client.

Around the same time, Abramoff arranged for $86,000 in consulting payments to be made to a firm operated by Rudy’s wife, Lisa. The FBI is now scrutinizing payments that Abramoff-related entities made to the wives of Doolittle and DeLay.

1. I suppose this is one of those 'better late than never' type of things. Unless
the bush** admin buries the investigation(s). They have a lot to lose if either of these crooked clowns go down.

2. I've been waiting for years for something to be done about DeLay;
this is a good first step, and I think the Abramoff saga is too big to be buried at this point. I just hope DeLay and Doolittle are proved to be guilty beyond a shadow of anyone's doubt. That would be a happy day.

4. I think that it was Doolittle's home that was searched
I know that Doolittle's home was searched a couple of weeks ago and the article is not clear. I think that it was Doolittle's home that was searched and not DeLay's home.

5. Doolittle's was for sure but this bodes badly for Delay, Abramoff must have finely
saved the worst of it for last.

6. Which home is the question; does he have two, and was it in VA?
TPM's Josh Marshall brought up the discrepancy; I just wonder. Will now go look for a location.

8. The one in VA was searched a few weeks ago, but that doesn't mean
DeLay's wasn't, maybe it just got less press since he's not a rep., and because he has so much to hide.

9. i hope Delay's was as well, i think he's just down to his house in Sugarland
by now, i could be wrong but i think he sold the townhouse he had in DC where his "Foundation" was set up.

Delay is the prize, almost as good as Rove but not quite.
