Complicated ballot papers, computer glitches, lost postal forms and other mishaps turned the Scottish election into a fiasco. For almost 100,000 Scots, the walk to the polling booth was a waste of time - their votes were rejected because their ballot papers were filled in incorrectly.
And a separate problem relating to new computer equipment caused the count in a dozen Scottish constituencies to be abandoned overnight, which delayed the results until late yesterday afternoon.
The Electoral Commission has embarked on what it promises will be a "full independent inquiry" into one of the worst managed elections in modern British history, which observers were comparing to an election in Zimbabwe.
The outgoing Scottish Executive, headed by Labour's Jack McConnell, is under attack from opposition politicians for deciding to hold local council elections on the same day as elections to the Scottish Parliament, in the hope that it would increase voter turnout.
