A night of glitches, rejected ballots, and lost votes
By Andy Smith
Published: 05 May 2007
Complicated ballot papers, computer glitches, lost postal forms and other mishaps turned the Scottish election into a fiasco. For almost 100,000 Scots, the walk to the polling booth was a waste of time - their votes were rejected because their ballot papers were filled in incorrectly.

And a separate problem relating to new computer equipment caused the count in a dozen Scottish constituencies to be abandoned overnight, which delayed the results until late yesterday afternoon.

The Electoral Commission has embarked on what it promises will be a "full independent inquiry" into one of the worst managed elections in modern British history, which observers were comparing to an election in Zimbabwe.

The outgoing Scottish Executive, headed by Labour's Jack McConnell, is under attack from opposition politicians for deciding to hold local council elections on the same day as elections to the Scottish Parliament, in the hope that it would increase voter turnout.

1. Yep!!!!! Sounds like the good old USA! But at least they seem to
recognize/admit it...we just deny it and sweep it under the rug until it's too late or the next election is coming up and we still have the same old problems. I'll bet KKKarl studies the elections around the world to get ideas how he can disenfranchise our next election. He must have a few up his sleeve while we complain. Thank God FL has taken up paper ballots again though that still has it's problems when crooked politicians are in charge of running the elections. I wonder haw many boxes of ballots from Dade County they'll find dumped in the_______ ? Fill in your own creative place. Maybe they will just burn them in a huge bonfire. Stock up on marshmallows!
