I am REALLY looking forward to tomorrow night .... further diefication of St Ronnie .....
.... as 10 bozos try to channel him and show themselves worthy of his sainted mantle .......

A mentally impaired president who was an intellectual lightweight and, arguably, a criminal .....

The standards for sainthood are pretty fucking low these days, as we shall see tomorrow.

1. I am simultaneously disgusted about the prospect of tuning into the debate
and intrigued by the freakshow it no doubt will be.

Be well. :toast:

3. not to mention the (rightful) vilification of Bush...
I'm sure they'll try to avoid it--specifically by focusing on Ronnie--but McCain will probably break out the Bush kneepads, and that'll force the others to distance themselves from the Chimp.

Should be fun.... ;-)

if he will ask real questions. Wasn't too impressed with Mr. Williams last week.

5. Ugh - like we didn't have enough of that in 2004 after he died.
It was so thick all over the corporate media, you would think there was no such thing as war in Iraq.

Why WERE the Reagan-Bush years allowed to be presented with such REVISIONISM by nearly EVERY broadcast media outlet?

7. Those of you who will watch are braver than I am.
Fill me in afterwards, OK? I just know I'll get sick if I have to watch this sideshow first hand. I might peek in for a minute here and there, but when the hypocrisy starts flowing, when they start acting as if they have been doing the right thing all along, and ignore facts that everyone knows are facts, I just can't stand it.

Be sure to have your shields on full force! You'll need them. And have Scotty standing at the ready to beam you up in an instant if need be!!

8. Channel Ronnie ?
That would be hard enough to do with a guy who had an
operating remote control. Unfortunately Uncle Ron was a few
batteries short of a full clicker.

9. Ron Reagan was George W. Bush with better handlers.
Honest to God, it's like we aren't supposed to remember that we actually lived through his Presidency. His CEO presidency started the great slide we now have to deal with.

11. I disagree
Reagan was no George W. Bush. No way. Poppy's running a shadow foreign policy was the real beginning of Shrub's presidency. No, Dubya makes Reagan look like Thomas Jefferson.

17. Poppy was doing the same as Reagan's VP.
Mike Deaver was the real power and decision maker in Reagan's administration. GHWB was finessing the big picture/global issues...Mike was the domestic guru. Ron? He got paraded out, when needed, to lay the folksy charm on the rubes that ate it up.

19. That's what I meant......But Reagan was FAR from Shrub
I firmly believe those who say there was a shadow foreign policy under Reagan run by GHWB out of the White House basement are telling the truth. Reagan was hoodwinked. Reagan and Bush were not friends. They did not like each other. I believe that the neocons hijacked the American government - not under Reagan - but under the presidency of BushI. I think, for the most part, Reagan was a traditional conservative versus this new stripe of anti-American bunch.

I would encourage you to read, "Reagan's Liberal Legacy" from the Washington Monthly written before Reagan's death http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2003/0301.green.html
It talks about the REAL legacy being one of compromise with the left on issue after issue.

Then, of course, the book causing all the hullabaloo....."Ronald Reagan: Fate, Freedom, and the Making of History"
by John Patrick Diggins
Diggins, a liberal of course, lays out the reasons why he thinks Reagan, far from being the far-right conservative was actually a "liberal romantic." Having read the book, I can tell you it altered my opinion of Reagan - a presidency I lived through as an adult. Some things look very different in hindsight. Here's a New York Times review that summarizes the book fairly well:
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/19910

Don't get me wrong, Reagan was not the ideal president by any stretch - but he was also far from the "Ray-Gun" that some DU posters portray him as. Diggins book is a good place to start the re-examination of Reagan.

21. You've got to be kidding. Raygun was and empty suit with an empty mind.
An actor that knew how deliver a line and made people feel good about their prejudices and bigotry. He gave the morans permission to let their demons out again, after the shame that Nixon and the cultural movement of the 70's, that caused them to hide their ugliness.

...you can't come back in about 200 years so you can see that the collapse of America will be considered to have begun under Reagan.

13. One thing that will be great about the debate
is that Tweety is totally against this war, and he will be the one answer the questions.

Plus - I guarantee Tweety will screw up.
They should of had KO asking the questions!

The lives that would've been lost are nothing in comparison to the lives that have been lost because Reagan won that election.

20. The idea of eight Dems debating annoyed me
Edited on Wed May-02-07 11:44 PM by rocknation
because I knew that nothing substantial could result. But the idea of ten Rethugs tapdancing around Bush's legacy (assuming that Tweety will keep his mouth shut long enough for them complete their answers) holds the promise of being funnier than The Daily Show...or at the very least, The Half-Hour News Hour...
