Bush Administration Agrees To Approve Wiccan Pentacle For Veteran Memorials

Settlement In Americans United Lawsuit Comes After Discovery Of A Pattern Of Bias Against Minority Faith

The Bush administration has conceded that Wiccans are entitled to have the pentacle, the symbol of their faith, inscribed on government-issued memorial markers for deceased veterans, Americans United for Separation of Church and State announced today.

The settlement agreement, filed today with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, brings to a successful conclusion a lawsuit Americans United brought against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in November.

The litigation charged that denying a pentacle to deceased Wiccan service personnel, while granting religious symbols to those of other traditions, violated the U.S. Constitution.

2. But I thought this was a christian nation?
Surely bush didn't check with one of his supervisors, jimmy dobson on this issue. How dare he rule in favor of constitutional liberties in the land of focus on the family.

8. We had a LTTE a bit ago about how witches didn't deserve military recognition.
The guy was pathetic and claimed to be retired military. With the next week or so there were two rebuttals by retired military guys totally debunking everything the guy said.

And, this is way over due. I'm a deist, but I respect the neopagan communities whether they are in the military or not, just as I respect all those having a centered and sane religious faith. By that I am excluding the controlling, authoritarian demagogues and their wing nut followers. I wouldn't call for their persecution, but I do not respect them, and I will fight their attempts to control our government.

13. "Clinton tries banning religious emblems from Arlington"

Or so would have read the headline to this story a decade ago. Today's headline writers are not nearly as creative. I wonder why?

But I believe I will headline this, "Americans United for the Separation of Church and State forces US to allow religous emblems on gravestones."
