Wednesday, April 11, 2007----
On Saturday, presidential hopeful John Edwards will join Southwest Floridians on the topic of global warming in an effort to urge Congress to cut carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent by 2050.
The event, which is from 1-4 p.m. at 2120 Main St., in front of the old Lee County Courthouse in downtown Fort Myers, is part of the Step it Up 2007 campaign, a day of citizen action focusing on global warming.
There will be exhibits on clean energy, energy efficiency, hybrid cars, and tips on what you can do. Speakers will address how this change will affect people, renewable energy, what locals are doing to help avert climate change and the proposed Glades coal-fired power plant.
Edwards, the featured speaker, will share his own concerns on climate change.
"Our generation must be the one that says, 'we must halt global warming.' Our generation must be the one that says 'yes' to renewable fuels and ends forever our dependence on foreign oil,'' he said in a statement. "And our generation must be the one that builds the new energy economy. It won't be easy, but it is time to ask the American people to be patriotic about something other than war.”
