2. I just heard that. I feel bad for him. I don't want him as my President,
but he does a great job in his role on Law & Order, and seems like a nice guy.

3. Sorry to hear that. Really.
But I hope he'll do the right thing, stay at home and bake, spend more time with the kids, etc.

14. I wonder if baking pot brownies would help in his treatment?

:hippie:

That is he does the baking.

5. More from Fox News, Red State via Hotline...
http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/

Thompson, who is considering a run for the White House in 2008, told FOX News that the illness is treatable.

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future — and with no debilitating side effects," Thompson said.

What You Need to Know
Facts About My Cancer

by Fred Thompson

We have all seen the courageous battle that Elizabeth and John Edwards are fighting, and there are so many others. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of good stories because of the medical advances that have been made. I have friends in politics, some in Congress, some running for President, and others who have successfully dealt with cancer. It is certainly no respecter of persons and totally non-partisan. That point was driven home to me about 2 1/2 years ago when, shortly after a routine physical, I was diagnosed with what the doctors call an indolent lymphoma. Of the 30-plus kinds of lymphoma this is a "good" kind, if there is such a thing.

I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future--and with no debilitating side effects.

I am one of the lucky ones. There are many lucky ones today. And for all of our diversity, we share one thing in common--a deep appreciation for the fact that we live in the United States of America and have the best medicine and the best doctors the world has even known.

16. Assuming that this is the first time this information has been revealed
it probably does mean that he's planning to run. Surely, if this was known before, someone would have reported it by now.

18. And this: Politico reports Thompson to attend this Friday's Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 10:58 AM by flpoljunkie

Thompson To Attend Catholic Prayer Breakfast

As he weighs a presidential bid, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is increasing his public profile in settings sure to draw buzz. First, late last month, he lunched with former RNC chairmen Ed Gillespie at the Mayflower Hotel, a companion and venue that Thompson had to know would bring attention. It did.

Then Thompson made an appearance at the Gridiron Dinner a few days after his Gillespie lunch, creating a minor stir at the white-tie gathering of Washington's journalistic and political elite.

Now, sources say, Thompson is set to hit the power meal trifecta, as he and his wife, Jeri, will attend the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Friday at the Washington Hilton. Modeled after the long-standing National Prayer Breakfast, the Catholic event is now in its fourth year of existence. President Bush attended last year and will be on hand again on Friday along with over a thousand high-profile Catholic clergy and laymen.

Thompson, who still spends part of his time in Washington, is no stranger to the capital's social swirl, but his recent pattern is a conspicuous one.

While I don't like his politics, he strikes me as honest and as a decent person. He is also a very good actor.

not overlook the fact that he thinks the war in Iraq is a GREAT idea, and that Chimpy has been ruuning it well. He is a neocon. Not sure about "decent" when you believe in the same stuff as Cheney. Let's not let our sympathies go overboard. That said, best wishes, Fred!

10. He's less likely to run for President, then
I would think. One of his co-stars on Law & Order, Jerry Orbach, died three years ago of cancer that he thought had been treated and was under control. Jerry worked until he wasn't physically able to work--his condition was well known to the cast. Has to give FDT pause.

I agree with flpoljunkie.

Frank disclosure of his health condition could indicate that he is seriously considering running.

13. I posted before reading the other comments
Since I have read that the condition was diagnosed over two years ago, I now agree with you--he's just getting it out early in the game so it will be a non-issue if he decides to announce.

15. He may be making the condition known in preparation for
entering the race. The condition is two years old, he is in remission and has no sypmtoms.

17. I didn't think he would run, and now I'm even more certain. The stress
of relentless campaigning is grueling even for younger/healthier candidates. He says he plans to sit back and watch whether the other GOPers can "carry the ball" in Nov. 08.

be a real contender in '08.

20. Fred is promoting Fred. He's raising his stock price with all of this
"will-I, won't-I" stuff. He knows Americans aren't going to elect an old guy with incurable (if treatable) cancer--not when compared to young, energetic Democratic candidates. He will end up boosting McCain, I predict.
