1. Anything to delay discussion of the elephant in the room, in the hopes that
the elephant will either die on its own, or grow so large that no one can remove it from the room.

2. It's either immigration or "protecting children from pedophiles"...
You're right. It's always the same old song and dance with these assholes.

4. He should have been more vocal about pedophiles
when his father was in office. He might have prevented the Franklin scandel about child porno that fizzled caused the republicans covered it up.

6. I was a little surprised over the weekend
I sort of thought the whole immigration debate had died down, but show after show was reminding me that it was The Most Important Issue Facing the American People Today. They just couldn't quite figure out why I should be life-and-death interested in it, though.

7. He's looking for a legacy.
I think he desperately wants to leave office having done something 'great'. It is looking like Iraq isn't going to do it for him, even if some miracle occurs and things settle down. At the rate things are going, we are going to be there for a long time and it isn't going to get resolved before he is out of office. And logically, even Bush cannot be expecting that miracle.

He doesn't have the political capitol to push any kind of Social Security reform through, they are going to do something about his tax cuts, No Child Left Behind is a dog....

So he has set his sights on immigration.

8. no, I think its more mercenary than that, I think its a calculated distraction when things go wrong.
in order to supplant bad press.

9. The reason I am inclined to think not is that his position on this is so generally unpopular.
I think that if he were trying to kiss some public ass he would come out swinging for a 50 foot concrete wall around the continental US. That seems to be what most Americans think they need to 'feel safe'. His guest worker approach, even with the stuff he has added to it, isn't going to go over that well, do you think?

I don't think life will get any better for Bush with immigration. Probably have riots.
