The implication of calling someone a crony is that they're on more or less equal footing with their benefactor.
The implication of calling someone a toadie is that they owe everything to their benefactor, but that the benefactor can, and often does, dismiss them when their usefulness ends.
Il Dunce, by the very nature of the man's defective personality, has virtually no cronies.
Take Gonzales, as but one example. No cronyism there. Gonzo's just endeared himself to the man-child-who-would-be-monarch by running cover for him for many years. He's now little better than a field hand invited to the big house for Sunday dinner.
How sad that our country is run, not even by cronies, but by toadies. But at least some of them are starting to turn by just throwing in the towel and leaving.
