Poll question: When do you think Gore will announce his decision?
I really really hope for the sake of the Democratic Party and the country that Al Gore gets back in the game again. I do not think he will be as wishy-washy as he was in 2000 and he certainly won't pick a Republican-Lite worm like Joe Lieberman again. He is no longer beholden to the DLC and would be a far more better candidate than just about everybody who is running except for maybe Obama or Kucinich.

So when do you think Gore will make the big announcement?

announced that he doesn't plan to run. Not at a formal announcement - but making the statement at several different public venues.

Ain't gonna happen folks. Albert has found his calling and it has to do with saving the world, not running for President (which, I hate to break it to ya, has little or nothing to do with saving the world. Quite the opposite, in fact).

He's said half a dozen times or more, in various ways, he's not running, but for some reason people still expect an announcement?

I'll certainly grant the possibility he'll change his mind, and I would be glad if he did. But, I'm really bored with the "when will he decide?" stuff since what he has directly said does not indicate he is doing anything but what he is currently doing. Everything else is nothing but idle speculation or an expression of hope.

6. Al Gore - 03.31.2007
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=3193817

Al Gore on Swedish television 03.31.2007

Al Gore: “I don’t have any plans to be a candidate for president again. I haven’t completely ruled out going back into politics at some point in my life. But the reason I don’t ever expect to be a candidate again is partrly because I’ve fallen out of love with politics, and I have less patience for some of the aspects of the politicsl system. But also because the way the political dialog is conducted over these 30 second TV commercials now, there is less of a chance to deal in depth with the biggest crisis that we have to face–this climate crisis.”

It's true he has to want the job before he can win the election.

But he has never said that he no longer wants to be President.

7. Al's a pretty smart guy. He knows the risk would be high if he goes in
early, and just as high if he waits til later.

Senator Clinton has lots of cash. Senator Obama is a strong contender. John Edwards is solid with wide appeal. Biden's no slouch on foreign policy. Dodd holds his own in the debates. Kucinich has fire. Gravel makes incredibly good sense on the issues. Clark may yet enter the race. Bill Richardson is on the way up, no question about it.

That's a strong field. If he gets in, it will be through an opening nobody sees now. Al will know it when it happens, but that's if it happens.

Al Gore is the best person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

I am dreaming of a Gore-Obama ticket in 2008. But there is no hurry for Gore to enter the race.

I think Al Gore is keeping his options open right now, watching how the "pre-season" goes. I don't think he yet knows what he will do. My guess is that the chance of him entering the race is somewhere between 20% and 35%.

Gore's current line - "I have no plans to be a candidate" - tells us that right now (today) he has no plans to run. But it doesn't prevent him from changing his plans and making new plans during the coming months.

Gore is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis, with An Inconvenient Truth winning the Oscar for best documentary, and lots of media attention around the Congressional Hearing on March 21st.

Gore is getting ready to bring out his next book The Assault on Reason - to be published in May. The theme of this book - why we need better decision-making in government - is very timely (whether he runs or not).

Gore is also leading Live Earth with concerts across the globe on 7/7/07 -- all with the aim of raising awareness and pushing for action to address the climate crisis.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

It all depends on the circumstances. In September, if the race for the Dem nomination is still wide open and Hillary's campaign is in trouble, it might create the conditions for Gore to enter the race.

Don't forget that Bill Clinton did not kick-off his campaign until October 1991. But Al Gore already has nationwide respect and name recognition that other wannabees can only wish for!

I say that Gore can wait until Sunday November 4th. Exactly one year out from the election, and 10 weeks before Iowa caucuses. Maybe on one of the Sunday TV talk-shows?

Gore would have no problem raising enough money to compete. I'm not worried about the staffing issue. I'm sure there are good people who would quit other campaigns to go and work for Al Gore.

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

"If (Al) was going to run in the future, of course I would support him. I think he'd be a fantastic president. He already got a majority of votes of people in this country once, and so that says something."

He's been out of politics since 2000, he has the perception of already being a loser (not to us, but to the masses of people), and he's as charismatic as John Kerry.

Obama is the one.

22. 60% believe Gore won in 2000
In a recent national poll, only 40% of respondents said they believe Bu$h won the 2000 election "fair and square".

Those are the same 40% who will almost certainly vote Republican no matter who the candidates are.

16. Gore CAN'T run for President until the Nobel Prize is awarded...
Whether he will win it or not, if he were to announce his candidacy first, the Nobel itself would "become political" in a way it never has before.

If he is a candidate and receives the Nobel, it would look like the Nobel Committee is using the prize to interfere in American Presidential Politics. The political backlash from this would be appalling.

If he announces first and isn't awarded the Prize, it will appear the committee is deliberately avoiding the shitstorm.

Either way the only decision is for him to continue doing what he is doing, Receive the Prize or not, then make his move if his motivation is strong enough.

29. Courtesy and understanding what it means...
As a Peace prize nominee, it is courtesy to avoid entangling the Nobel committee in presidential politics. It would simply be bad form for Gore to become a candidate before the prize is awarded knowing he is a nominee. Do you think it is not important enough to justify holding off a presidential bid in order to preserve the institution's credibility?

I think Gore does feel it is important and beneficial to wait, not just as a matter of diplomacy in this case, but for many other reasons as well.

So, that being said your subject line is not only unfair, but painfully inaccurate.

30. There is no way Gore is waiting to make his decision based on the Nobel
And to pretend the Nobel committee is somehow above politics or tarnishment is laughable.

I think he hasn't made a decision though he seems to be leaning no.

And again a man who waits for a private prize to decide whether he wants public office deserves neither.

21. Repeating psychology
although Gore is a big learner and does change dramatically, though not in phony ways(the GOP slander spin), might suggest Gore would tend to act energetically and late, too late in the game. Despite his long experience.

Why? simply because he is not gaming the situation to make a run but might make a spontaneous decision under certain circumstances. Therefore he has surrendered any cynical control of the situation and his past patterns will rule once more. Most people are predictable, unfortunately, especially in fated mistakes. People sometimes are projecting another Gore, one who like them wants and intends and imagines him running, all evidence to the contrary. Projecting their own loyal desires.

I think any Gore effect will be intended like the belated Dean endorsement, strong and too late and intended to help the best person with the best ideas in a time of need. If he is thinking anything he might be thinking how to help better this time and whether the losing centrist wing he came to oppose so strongly can be thwarted(not so much a matter of personalities but policy). Bill Clinton is dipping into his personal capital right now- and he does not always help other candidates win either. That is also Bill's nature, to jump in more quickly with more acumen.

Things should get very interesting when the conjunction of debates and the tight opening primary schedule reveals threatening gaps between the voters' will, the perception, the gaming, the desperate issues and "winning" as opposed to quality. Then one might say, when democracy itself hangs "in the balance", Gore might spend his current policy popularity capital. Late fall, or too little too late.

23. I love these polls..
based on past polls at DU, about 60% of us want Gore to run..but 60% don't believe Gore will run.

I think Gore would make a great candidate if he ran the right kind of campaign, but like most DUers I don't think Gore will run. We have plenty of Democrats running, and most voters have accepted we'll have to choose this current field of candidates.

in 2004 I remember going on a wild goose chase for a candidate. Originally I was interested in Kerry because I thought he could beat Lieberman in the primaries. Then I became interested in Dean because he opposed the war in Iraq..and I loved his position on healthcare. Then Dean dropped out before my primary..leaving me casting a protest vote for Kucinich!

I don't wish to got on that wild goose chase again. As in the past, I hope I can pick a viable candidate before my primary..and still have a good reason to support that candidate when I vote. IMO protest votes represent frustration with the party, not support for an electable candidate. In other words, I shall not back any candidate who appeals to me, but also a candidate who will not drop out just before or after my primary is held!

the survival of the earth as his primary focus. Running for president against the brutal assault of the ignorant and the malicious might degrade or even negate the great strides he has made worldwide. The trouble with America is that the people in power are truly unfeeling, untalented freaks. They have already started bashing Gore to try to mute his impact on the almighty corporations. There is apparently no end to their slavish and sycophanic adherence to the gods of greed and power.
