Poll question: Did you ever seriously consider Kerry as your candidate?
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 03:29 AM by eileen_d
Maybe it's late to be doing this... but it's late and the question just popped in my head. I hope it is not inflammatory to ask; I'm just interested in the percentages here on DU

Edited to clarify: "Yes" votes would include if you did consider him but ultimately decided not to support him.

I know, it's not scientific. And it's a poll. :spank:

5. Kerry to Dean to Lieberman?!
Or is the Joementum thing for comedy? That would be going from left to middle to right though.

4. I guess it's targeted more at people who don't support Kerry at this time
I'm just wondering if Kerry has always turned them off, or if Kerry was among the candidates they supported at one time but then got crossed off the list for one reason or another.

6. No
I was rather shocked at the Iowa results.

(Didn't take Edwards very seriously either.)

8. Yes
In the beginning of last year, as Bush strapped on the dynamite for his American suicide mission, I desperately read every word of every candidate's web site. I liked Kerry for his solid energy policy vision. Then I learned he voted for the war.

Then in February, I saw Clark on Meet the Press and I was hooked for life.

Sob.

11. Yup
And then he voted for the war.

And then I looked back on his vote for PATRIOT.

And then I looked at his record.

I still would vote for him in the GE...but I would rather not have to.

34. same here ...
then he voted for war and I went new candidate hunting.

Now I'm lost. My heart, my energy, my enthusiasm and my money are no longer in this race.

I'll vote for the nominee, likely Kerry, but that's it.

18. No.
I looked at him pretty closely, as I did all of the candidates. I appreciated some things about him, was concerned about others...just like all the other candidates.

Kerry, and the rest of the pack, didn't reach the levels the candidate who had already captured my mind, heart, and vote do, so I didn't seriously consider him as my candidate. I still don't. If he wins the nomination, I'll vote for him in the general election. At that point, I'll be voting for someone else's candidate. Someone else, or a large group of someones, will have made the decision for me, so I wouldn't call him "my" candidate. But I'll vote for him.

Meanwhile, I've found plenty to like about many of the candidates, but only one meets my criteria for a primary vote: my man, Dennis Kucinich.

19. I very definitely, deliberately walked way from John Kerry.
I'm one of the folks who is now saying that I will
not, under any circumstances, vote for John Kerry.

But I actually used to be a Kerry supporter. I
liked him, I'd spoken to his staff more than once,
and had attended a garden party of his up in NH
when the 2004 race was first shaping up. Being a
Democrat in NH, I am, essentially, unrepresented
in the Federal government and John Kerry said to
me "I'd like you to think of me as your third
senator."

But, unfortunately, when the Iraqi War Resolution
my "third senator" voted with my other two Senators
in favor of giving Bush authority. And he did this
even though he'd stated pretty clearly to the anti-war
folks that he was going to withhold authority.
So I took the picture of me-and-John off the
refrigerator, started sending back "take me off
your mailing list" responses to his campaign
E-Mails, and went shopping for a new candidate
to support.*

Since then, the behavior of the Kerry campaign
has deeply confirmed in me my decision to walk
away from this gentleman.

Atlant

*I landed in Howard Deans camp quite a few
months later after hearing both Gephardt and
Dean speak. I also heard Al Sharpton speak at
the most-recent big anti-war rally in Washington.)

The fact that his largest contributor is his brother's corporate media defending law firm makes my support for him soft.

24. Kerry was my guy until Oct '02
When he turned his back on the opportunity to help stop the BushCo war machine dead in it's tracks.

If he gets the nomination, I'll literally be wearing a clothes pin on my nose when I go to the polls in Nov.

26. I considered it at one point
It was before I started researching the candidates and if memory serves me, before I even knew Dean was going to run.

Kerry was on MTP and while I thought the interview was somewhat boring, Russert asked a question that still PISSES ME OFF today. I'm talking blood boiling angry.

Russert brought up Kerry's wife...how outspoken and strong she can be and he actuall had the nerve to ask Kerry "if you run for President, would you put a muzzle on her?"

WTF???? Kerry was stuned by the question, had that "WTF?" look on his face (the first and only geniune look I've ever seen) and said "No! Of course not!" He was obviously upset and had he expected the question, I imagine he would have insulted Russert for even asking.

27. I considered him briefly after Gore made it clear that he was not running
But decided the Kucinich, Gephardt and Dean were better. Gephardt only being redeemed for IRW, rosegarden etc. by an extremely stong labor record and a desire to run on labor issues.

Then Kerry went on a streak that bugged the hell out of me.

Teacups- We heard the Get over it shit enough from republicans without him saying it.

Mandatory Service for highschoolers- I believe that if Bush were to propose this most people here would be enraged. The crap doesn't stink any less coming out of a different butt.

Running as a Walter Sobchack (Lebowski's pal) candidate

Kicking off campaign with an amazingly Bush-like warship theme- Message recieved: Strong defence, let's play this the GOP way.

37. I bet I was one of the earliest Kerry supporters
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 07:52 PM by deutsey
I wrote him a letter in 2001 encouraging him to run. He wrote me a nice handwritten note back. I am not a Kerry supporter now, but I do cherish that note he sent me.

I support Dean now, because he, more than Kerry, has advanced a grassroots movement in this country. I'll vote for Kerry, but I won't do so enthusiastically.

And I have say that I'm very disappointed in that. I had so hoped Kerry would carry the banner of the progressivism I embrace.
