Did Gore have any smack down moments today?
Were there any moments where someone made a ridiculous statement and Gore smacked them down? I've been watching and listening but I did miss some parts today!

1. the best I saw...
Hastert said something like "you are a movie star"

Gore's response: "No, Rin Tin Tin is a movie star, I do a slide show."

3. Is that what he said?
I thought he said something about how he enjoyed Denny's role as Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers movie. I must have misheard. Sorry.

11. Priceless; it's a sound-bite friendly moment so it should be everywhere
Inhofe was speechifying and Gore tried to interject with a response. Boxer intervened and told Inhofe he could have as much time at the end of his questions to sum up, but, in the meantime, he had to ask questions. Inhofe tried to brush her off, she picked up the gavel and said, "there was an election," you don't control the process anymore. The room roared, and all Inhofe could do was rub his backside and grin.

8. I am surprised that Inhofe even made it to the hearing. Did he have his lips or were they still
stuck to the ass of Western Fuels Association?

9. I recall one this morning
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 04:07 PM by eringer
Responding to a texas republican congressman who basically told Al Gore that his science was flawed and that the temp doesn't always go up when the amount of CO2 increases, Al said something to the extent that you don't wonder whether the baby is fireproof when the cribs on fire. He had several good ones in that interchange but that was the one I remember most.
As an aside, someone needs to tell Tipper not to chew gum when she sits behind her husband testifying to the Hill. It looks very unprofessional.

10. He's attempting to "bring the other side to the table" so he's being very diplomatic.
Darn it! ;) But, what's encouraging is that many Republicans on the committee actually appear concerned.

14. He had a moral smack down moment with Inhofe - - looking like a much better person
Inhofe was being a real jerk - - asking Gore "when did you stop beating your wife?" type questions, demanding "yes or no" answers to his traps, jumping down Gore's throat for not answering the moment Gore opened his mouth to reply, demanding that Boxer give him tons of extra time because Gore was wasting all Inhofe's time allotted for questions. He looked like Joe McCarthy on crack.

And when his time was finally up, Gore thought for a second, and then said quietly, with malice toward none and charity toward all: I've been sitting here, wondering how I can reach you. We have a mutual friend (who he named); let's us three have breakfast together, away from the lights and the cameras, and discuss this.

Gore turned the other cheek.

It was stunning. It really was. And what was most impressive was that later Inhofe agreed to have breakfast with Gore and their mutual friend, to discuss global warming.

I needed to hear that! That's Gore allright.

And not to bring a bummer up here BUT..I saw where tweety called him "The bathtub ring". Now we know that says it all about tweety and nothing about Gore!

18. Gore seemed calm and didn't let that asshat get to him....
but he didn't do anything to hit back either. He kinda looked a little weak. Nanci had to bail him out, and did a good job doing so.

20. Gore didn't look weak at all. Quite the opposite, I feel.
The Reuglican was obviously trying to provoke Gore, most likely to provide fodder for the right wing noise machine, and Gore was smart enough to recognize the trap.

21. I didn't think he looked weak.
Al looked like he had his head about him when Imhofe was trying to belittle and batter him into reacting so he would look like a hothead.

Inhofe didn't have anything to say, so he took his time to poke Al with a stick. He didn't want to know about green energy.

How much Al spends on energy expenses seems to be a hot topic for the Right Wingers.

22. Yes, because when you can't win the argument "play the man rather than the ball"
The far right has done an excellent job over the past twenty years "playing the man instead of the ball" - - when they can't win an argument, they try to make the messenger into such a controversial figure that eventually they can discredit the messenger's argument. Inhofe was trying to bait Gore into giving him one of the following attack ads on a silver platter:

"Al Gore refused to sign a pledge to reduce his energy consumption. How dare that hypocritical rich b*stard insist regular Joes like you and me live in caves to combat global warming while he lives like a king, spewing out carbon by the ton from his Nashville palace?"

"Al Gore hates Republicans/Conservatives/Christians/Red Staters/Common Folks Like You And Me. Isn't this the kind of behavior that has made you sick of Washington? Why should we listen to Gore when he has no respect for Republicans/Conservatives/Christians/Red Staters/Common Folks Like You And Me?"

After they repeat those talking points enough, the person becomes toxic enough that their ideas can be discredited just by having come from them. Several of the Republicans today discussed the Kyoto treaty as if it were insulting just to say the words. And Gore acknowledged that the treaty itself had become so demonized that it was a waste of time to try and get the U.S. on board - - we just have to concentrate on the next treaty.

24. You can watch the entire testimony to the Senate at C-Span
I recommend that everyone do so who hasn't seen it.

The introduction by President Gore was so moving it brought me to tears.

Senator Inhofe and Senator Larry Craig were real jerks but he handled them well.
