WASHINGTON — President Bush sent a powerful message of support Tuesday for embattled Attorney General
Alberto Gonzales, calling his longtime friend to express support in the face of calls for his resignation.

The White House also denied reports that it was looking for possible successors for Gonzales. "Those rumors
are untrue," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.

1. He's toast.
Talk about the kiss of death. I'll be surprised if he makes it to the Friday news-dump.

3. I think he's fork-ready too . . .
But the absurdity of the president calling to "demonstrate support" strikes me. Shit, Gonzales is the prez's employee! If he has to make a public display of support it just highlights the political uncertainty that surrounds the postion, specifically because the AG's office has been politicized beyond all normal bounds.

But "support?" It's like Georgie has abandoned him already.

4. I hope he stays on.
If Gonzales resigns, the Bushites and radical Republicans will shout: "End of scandal! You nasty liberals brought down another good man. Now, let's move on!"

It looks like a Rove-distraction special to have everybody speculating on when Alberto leaves and who will replace him.

I want to know if Bush started this firing of USAttorneys process. I want to know how Rove was involved. I want to know why Carol Lam was really fired. I want to know a lot more about this ... and I'm afraid it won't happen if Bush/Rove throw Gonzales' carcass to the media wolves anytime soon.
