By The Associated Press

March 16,2007 | -- THE POLL: Time Magazine nationwide telephone survey March 9-12

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE -- 682 Democratic voters and those who say they lean Democratic, sampling error plus or minus 4 percentage points

Hillary Rodham Clinton 34 percent

Barack Obama 26 percent

Al Gore 13 percent

John Edwards 10 percent

(other candidates were below 5 percent)

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE -- 631 Republican voters and those who say they lean Republican, sampling error plus or minus 4 percentage points

Rudy Giuliani 40 percent

John McCain 20 percent

Newt Gingrich 10 percent

Mitt Romney 7 percent

(other candidates were below 5 percent)


GENERAL ELECTION TRIAL HEATS -- 1,500 registered voters, sampling error plus or minus 3 percentage points


Clinton 44 percent

McCain 43 percent


Obama 44 percent

McCain 41 percent


Giuliani 47 percent

Clinton 43 percent


Obama 44 percent

Giuliani 43 percent


OF INTEREST: Giuliani had a 14-point lead over McCain in February in this poll -- now up to 20 points. Clinton had a 19-point lead over Obama in January -- now down to 8 percentage points.

8. Because a significant number of people choose him
The poll is a snapshot of who people want now. If Gore doesn't enter, these people will go somewhere, but it is significant that 13% of the people want to vote for a "candidate" who has does NOTHING to encourage them that he is running.

My guess is that they are looking for Gore or if he doesn't run, a "Gore-like" candidate, which will differ for different people but is likely to be an experienced anti-Hillary.

I have no idea who could fill this. Maybe Dodd, who has a good environmental record and experience.
