History Channel: Kent State
Our Generation: "Kent State" History

It just finished. Looks like it will repeat at 6PM tonite and 8:30AM tomorrow morning. Eastern Time.

Ending Message
Singular myth: That students brought about an end to America's involvement in Vietnam.

More complicated: Millions of Americans living in small towns and communities like this (Kent, Ohio) decided that the price of victory was too great.

4. And let's not forget Jackson State.
Sorry, I always have to mention the Black students slaughtered there around the same time, because there has been far less focus from "mainstream America" on these killings.

But progressives back then knew the fight against racism and against war were one and the same.

6. Ohio
Ohio
lyrics by Neil Young

--------

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

7. I certainly remember that day.
It hit campuses like bombshells. Profs had to cancell classes; no one was paying any attention to lectures. Social science classes erupted in arguments, open brawls. And it was a sunny day, just like this one.

A couple of nights later we had a large protest on our campus. At 11pm a rumor was purposely circulated that the TN national guard were on their way. The protest broke up immediately, and we went back to our dorms to drink beer and listen to "The Pusher" on our stereos.
