John Edwards Lauds Sen Webb's Bill of Use of Funds for Military Action
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 02:06 PM by benny05
Senator John Edwards released the following statement today praising Senator Jim Webb for introducing a bill this week which would prohibit the use of funds for military action in Iran without congressional approval.

"The threat of a nuclear Iran is one of the greatest threats to world peace today, but we must deal with this threat by being smart. It's impossible to trust President Bush to do that - his reckless Iraq policy has created a chaotic situation in Iraq and damaged America's moral standing in the world.

"Congress has the power to stop this President from taking our country down another disastrous course in Iran, and they should use it now. President Bush long ago exceeded his authority in Iraq and needs to return to Congress for new authority to manage the withdrawal of the U.S. military presence.

"He certainly has not been granted Congressional authority to pursue military action in Iran and Congress should put him on notice that he must request authorization before doing so.

"I applaud Senator Webb for standing up to President Bush and introducing a bill that sets a clear standard and reflects the will of the American people.

"No President should ever take any option off the table, but instead of focusing on military action, we should focus on the many steps in front of us that have not been used - negotiating directly with Iran, getting our European allies to join us in offering an economic package to assist Iran in meeting its energy needs peacefully, and isolating Iran's radical leader.

"America used to be the light that the rest of the world looked up to in times of crisis. We must stop this stubborn pursuit of foreign policy based on ideology, and return America to its place of moral leadership."

3. I hear the praise for Webb in Edwards' voice, and am reminded again
that this is how parties work when they work well, and that if George W. Bush were a man of character and integrity -- as Edwards and Webb are -- Webb's bill would not even be necessary.

Because Bush is who he is, and his administrations have been as horrific as they are, I'm encouraged to have Webb, Edwards, and others frame the public debate so well.

Nice goin', lads.

4. Everyone, including Democrats, have got to stop going on and on about
how "dangerous" Iran is. Jesus, how can you say that Iran is one of the most serious dangers in the world today, and military options should be on the table and then talk about getting congressional approval? If all of the congress view Iran the way Edwards, Clinton, Obama, (et. al.) do, then congressional approval shouldn't be that hard, anyway. Why can't they say that Iran is not currently a threat to the US in any way and that any aggressive moves toward Iran must be approved by congress (which it won't do). If any nation, anywhere, of any stripe becomes a threat to the US, then and only then will we consider any actions, regardless of the nature of those actions. Iran is no threat to the US, why is that so hard to say?

5. The future is really looking brighter
and brighter with such visionary and respected folks coming from the Democratic Pary. What an amazing bench. What a shame there are only so many oval shaped offices at the White House.

9. Tommorrow Begins Today is everyday
for Edwards. I love how he's supporting the current Congress and their efforts to move things along.

But WE have to do our part too....keep writing your reps and let them know how you feel. ESPECIALLY, if they're Bushbots :toast:
