7. Often when you have lived in the south it is easy to fall back into
those speech tones and rhythms, when you're surrounded by them again.

It's jarring for me to hear my sister talking like a Texan, but she's always been very susceptible to picking up accents.

15. As I recall
when Bill Clinton was campaigning in Southern states back in 1992, his accent became a lot more pronounced.

2. HIllary is falling into the trap of being overly managed...
Out Moms all told us to "be ourselves" growing up... Why is it that so many politicians ignore this. Insincerity speaks volumes and has done in many an otherwise good candidate...

mandatory disclaimer (or at least it seems to be mandatory): I'm not particularly a fan of HRC-- just my personal observations during her current campaign

18. Picking up accents easily does not equal insincerity.

It shows more flexibility and adaptability than having an accent that never changes. Neither one is "right" or "wrong."

Obama sounded very Southern when speaking in Selma, even said "y'all." As far as I know, he never lived in the South. Hillary did live in the South long enough to have picked up an accent.

I'm not supporting either one of them but I'll defend anyone's right to pick up an accent.

Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 09:07 PM by hlthe2b
My point was IF (big IF) she was being advised to speak more with an accent....Big difference.

I don't know if she was advised or if, as you say it comes naturally. But, If it was the former, I think it is a warning signal that she is being overly coached and it is not in her best interest.

When I get with a bunch of people with southern accents, mine quickly comes back like I never left.

6. Ordinarily I might find this a little offensive, but, right now,
with all the really important shit going on, I am incapable of working up much steam about it.

The gigantic, glaring hypocrisies so rampant overshadow something so piddly.

9. In this part of the speech, she was quoting an old hymn
or something like that. It's not like she spoke like that during her entire speech. (Though she does have a Southern accent that, like mine, comes and goes).

10. Some Southern accents are very contagious
I'm originally a Californian -- I don't know if there is a Californian accent other than, like the Midwest, a tone that is pretty flat -- but whenever I'm in certain Southern states for more than a gas stop, I pick up the drawl almost immediately, especially in states like Arkansas and Tennessee.

13. And some people pick up accents easily while others don't.

Psychologists have studied the phenomenon and found that it's not a deficiency to pick up accents easily. It does not mean that people don't know who they are or are "pandering." People who pick up accents easily are somewhat more adaptable and flexible than those who don't but there's nothing "wrong" with either group.

My daughter has always picked up accents wherever she goes, and sometimes just from a close friend with an accent.

12. Obama sounded more Southern than Clinton did

in the clips I saw. He actually said "y'all." He said "Don't tell me I'm not coming home when I come to Selma, Alabama," which was a little odd, I thought. (Yes, I understand what he meant but it was still an odd way to say it, IMO.) His speech cadences were surprisingly Southern for someone who's never lived in the South.

I'm not supporting either Clinton or Obama, but I think it's silly how people are attacking Clinton over this. If she sounded Southern at times, so what? She lived in the South for many years and was among Southerners again so it would be natural if she sounded more Southern in Alabama than she does in N.Y. Obama has never lived in the South, AFAIK, but he was the one saying "y'all." Why aren't people jumping on him for "pandering"?

14. Both talk like their audience
HRC did it to a black audience in NYC. BO did it in front of an urban black audience in the McCaskill campaign. DemBones wants someone to call it pandering. Okay, I'll call it pandering.

17. Exactly, which is not necessarily "pandering."

Is it "pandering" to speak Spanish to a crowd that is made up of people who speak Spanish in their homes? Or is it simply relating to people? It could be either, and to assume that someone is "pandering" is unfair, since we can't get inside their heads to know what they're thinking.

I'm even willing to give W a pass on his accent because I think he tried to talk like a Texan in his youth, perhaps even did talk like a Texan, before being shipped off to Andover and Yale. (I wouldn't be surprised if he got yelled at at home for talking Texan, either.) When he slips into his faux-Texas accent, it's very odd but I think he usually does it in situations where he's hearing other Southern accents. I'm not sure he does it consciously.

...a lot of reasonable responses, though. I know myself when I was in Alabama had a very "southern" accent. It's easy enough to pick up.

...they have to remember they aren't operating in a vacuum. Swing voters are out there, and when they see this BS, I'm sure many puked. I hated it, it was like watching a car wreck.

Obama was in on the crap too, but he laid down some tough love. He took on the old guard of the civil rights movement for letting them dumb down what Dr. King was pursuing. For that I'll tip the hat, but the accent stuff...

KNOCK IT OFF, we're not idiots!

Ev Emerald...This is not the way to win. Having 15 faces and just as many accents. The pandering was so transparent it made me squirm. I kept screaming inside...NO, No, No...stop it, the departure was so vivid a deaf man could pick it up. It looks stupid and it is not sincere. This is not the way to VICTORY...just the opposite, and the sooner they get the message the better.

And you bet the opposition will pick it up, run with and rub it in their faces. Why do it, and shouldn't we be helping these people stop making fundamental errors?

35. please....those that will vote for her see the propaganda for what it is.
I can't believe the right-wingers do not see the hypocrisy. Bush has used his on-again-off-again fake southern drawl for years--and not when he was quoting someone but because he is pretending to be from Texas.

The neo-cons hire people to pick apart everything she says and does in an attempt to distort and create issues where there are none. The propaganda-machine (formerly known as the media) reinforces the load-of-bull. They likely received the talking points via fax.

Anyone who buys this crap is helping to send America down the porcelain bowl--and frankly is not very bright. While our Bush rapes and robs America, we discuss the accent Hillary used when she was quoting someone.
