question for military members/vets: is the condition of building 18, and the fact that it has been
allowed to continue, a court-martial offense? I am serious about this--is it possible to court-martial the people in charge--maj. gen. weightman, for example? whoever signed off on the "renovations" of building 18? what, if anything, CAN be done to these people?

what do YOU think should happen to them, to the people who were paid for the renovations, etc., etc?

1. No court martial
but some General will be "granted" early retirement.

2. With officers they can do things that turns their career into shit.
He could be facing the prospect of never seeing that next star. That could kill his career.

5. I just watched a CSpan special on Bldg 18
The military thanked the Washington Post and the soldiers involved for revealing these conditions. They will do better in the future., they say.

Sure, W has cut military benefits and VA benefits.

Even more interesting, the military refused to answer questions on Michael J. Wagner who used his time on the government dole to build his non-profit in Dallas, also possibly diverting donors to Walter Reed to his enterprise.

6. I wonder how stupid the military thinks we all are. At the latest, they KNEW about the conditions
in Building 18 last october, when they started the "mice control management program--whereby the mice are now at a "manageable level"

in truth, soldiers have been complaining for quite some time. A friend reminded me today that Salon.com had an article on this nearly two years ago. I was speaking with a young man earlier tonight, who said that one of his responsibilities in the military here at our base was dealing with those who had come out of Walter Reed--they have been talking of their treatment in less than complimentary terms, and some of them were apparently housed in building 18.

so I don't buy that the WaPo article was the first they learned of it. that is simply unbelievable.

what I want to know is why other accomodations are not being found for the soldiers while that piece of garbage "renovated hotel" is being fixed --obviously for the FIRST time.

does anybody have any idea who was given the contract for that supposed first "renovation".

maybe we should insist they all be housed in the white house and the veep's house until the building is fixed. those two, after all, are the ones RESPONSIBLE for these people.

7. No court martial
In fact the sorry state of affairs at Building 18 is not really a surprise to military members. Combat bases are always first up for new constructions and renovation. And the more "firepower" you have the more funds you receive. Fort Hood being a case in point. When I arrived at Hood in 1996 from a year in Korea, I was amazed. Korea is considered a back water by many in the DOD and anyone in 2ID land at that time lived in barracks that were condemned. No shit.......my ceiling in my room had a crack in it that allowed me to see the hot female 2LT above me when she came out of the shower. I'm sure that makes me a pig, but she and I often joked about it. Anyway when I got to Fort Hood, nearly every barracks was brand new, being remodelled or being demolished to build new ones. Same for Fort Stewart back then.......Posts like Korea, Schofield Barracks, HI and other places got the last of the funds because the "war fighters" didn't live there. Yes 2ID is a combat command as is Hawaii, but the "real warfighters" in the eyes of many were the soldiers at Hood, Bragg and Stewart.......So yes it is a disgrace about Bldg. 18, but it is not surprising at all. I'm actually surprised the building had four stable walls and a roof.........Walter Reed is "unsexy" to many in the Pentagon and as a result wouldn't get the funds the "sexier" combat posts got.......
